We know it's Wednesday, but we wanted to look back at last Saturday! Why? Because there's never a wrong time to celebrate Washington's educators. 💯 Here's a group photo of State Superintendent Chris Reykdal with all 18 Regional Teachers of the Year and Classified School Employees of the Year taken just before last weekend's Educator of the Year Awards.

Earlier today, The Seattle Times published an op-ed by State Superintendent Chris Reykdal.

Superintendent Reykdal's message is clear: Washington's K–12 public schools are underfunded. Out-of-control costs for essentials like fuel, utilities, and insurance are straining budgets, forcing districts to make hard choices, including laying off staff, increasing class sizes, reducing programs, and even closing schools.

Our state has a long history of providing a high-quality public education to its students, but the current situation is unsustainable.

"As state funding for the basics continues to dwindle, it is becoming increasingly less likely that Washington students will maintain their place as top performers nationally," said Superintendent Reykdal in his op-ed.

Superintendent Reykdal has a proposal to increase funding for schools. Click the link to learn more about the plan.

"Native American people were, and are, important...We've got to keep that value of humanity within ourselves, within our souls," says Cowlitz Indian Tribe Elder Tanna Engdahl during a training for the John McCoy (𝘭𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘭𝘢š) 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 (JMLSTI) curriculum.

OSPI's Office of Native Education (ONE) regularly provides JMLSTI training to schools and school districts. In 2015, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 5433, requiring that JMLSTI or other tribally developed curriculum be taught in schools.

JMLSTI was developed by ONE in partnership with Tribes, educators, and other partners. The curriculum has been endorsed by all 29 federally recognized Tribes in Washington.

Congratulations to Kennewick School District multilingual learner kindergarten teacher Kori Cannon and Washougal School District multilingual learner paraeducator Dana Wilson. Cannon is the 2027 State Teacher of the Year. Wilson is the 2026 State Classified School Employee of the Year.

“Public education is about providing access and uplift to all students and their families,” said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. “Kori Cannon and Dana Wilson work in diverse communities with students who may be learning English or speak a language other than English at home. Their commitment to building structures and systems to support these students benefits everyone in the community and is exactly what we should be doing in public education."

Cannon and Wilson received the honor earlier today at the annual Educator of the Year Awards.

A few of our staff took time out of their busy days to harvest some tasty bites of apples for the Washington Apple Crunch as part of the annual Taste Washington Day.

Taste Washington is a celebration of local food in school meals. The day is held in early October in honor of National Farm to School Month.

The Farm to School program connects schools to local farms with the goal of improving student nutrition and academic outcomes, as well as strengthening local food systems, economies, and communities.

It took a few tries, but we came up with a quality last line. The best part? It's true!

Washington's Constitution guarantees a basic education to "all children residing within its borders."

And yes, Washington's students learn about haiku along with other forms of writing, including essays, research papers, and short stories, to name a few. When it comes to reading, in the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only five states statistically outperformed Washington's students in 4th grade reading, and only four states outperformed Washington's students in 8th grade reading.

No matter the language, the research on learning more than one language is clear. Being multilingual strengthens literacy, enhances cognitive ability, including attention and memory, and improves problem-solving.

The number of dual, heritage, and Tribal language programs has grown over the past few years due to a sustained effort by OSPI, the Legislature, and local school districts.

There are currently 195 dual language programs in public schools across Washington, along with 115 heritage language programs and 52 Tribal language programs. These programs provide instruction in English and another language.

In this video, students in a dual language math class talk about their experiences.
