October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month ( ), and here at the Washington State Independent Living Council (WASILC), we are celebrating the immense value, talent, and diverse skills that workers with disabilities bring to Washington’s workforce!
True inclusion means ensuring that everyone has equal access, authentic opportunity, and the support needed to succeed and thrive in our communities and workplaces. Yet, significant barriers to economic independence still exist.
By the Numbers:
The Employment Gap: According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the labor force participation rate for people with disabilities remains significantly lower than that of people without disabilities, highlighting a persistent gap in equal economic opportunity.
Economic Value: Inclusive workplaces report higher rates of innovation, improved retention, and stronger overall team performance.
The Independent Living Impact: Across Washington state, our Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and community partners work daily to champion accessibility, barrier removal, and self-direction.
This October, we call on employers, community leaders, and policymakers across Washington to look beyond outdated misconceptions, embrace universal design, and champion inclusive hiring practices. Talent is universal; opportunity must be too.
Let’s build a truly accessible workforce—not just in October, but all year round. 💡🤝
