Thanks to HR 1, passed by Congressional Republicans, Washington hospitals and community health clinics are facing billions of dollars in losses in the coming years. That means fewer beds, staff, and services for people who need health care, especially in rural areas. Hospitals and clinics will close and people won't be able to get to a doctor or nurse when they need one. Building a health care system that works for every Washingtonian is a cornerstone of the work Senate Democrats do every day, from passing policy bills that protect access to care to funding a budget that puts people first.

While the other Washington fails to put guardrails around AI, we're leading the way on commonsense AI regulations. This year, Democrats set new requirements for how chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta AI interact with kids who use them. Pew Research has found that nearly a third of teens use these chatbots daily, and our new protections help ensure these tools are safer for kids to use.

As grocery prices rise and families struggle to put food on the table, we want to thank our food banks — and everyone who has donated to them — for keeping our communities fed. We're grateful for the work they're doing to help the millions of people who have lost their food benefits because of Trump's SNAP cuts and stricter program eligibility requirements. While Congressional Republicans want people to starve so billionaires can get richer, Washington Democrats are fighting to end food insecurity. This year, we passed bills that preserve funding for our state's food assistance programs, invest in improving food bank infrastructure, and help create a statewide strategy to ensure families can access affordable, nutritious food.

Many of us felt that small earthquake on the Key Peninsula a few weeks ago, right? And it was no big deal. But are we all ready for a serious earthquake in our community? The Great Washington ShakeOut is an annual chance to practice earthquake drills and check on preparedness in our homes, businesses, schools, and anywhere else we might be. At 10:15 on 10/15, shake it out and practice earthquake safety with millions. Learn more at ShakeOut.org

As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the original stewards of the lands and waters we now share in Washington — communities whose profound relationship with these lands remains unbroken since time immemorial. Honoring this day means telling the whole story — confronting the uncomfortable truths of our history without looking away, while recognizing that Indigenous communities are not relics of the past. They are our friends, our neighbors, and our leaders. Their resilience shapes our present, and recognizing our shared future is essential to building a stronger state for everyone. Today, take the time to connect with Tribal Nations nearest you; not just their enduring history, but their current contributions and their vision for tomorrow.

Instead of going after the “worst of the worst,” the Trump administration continues to target community members working hard to support their families. As ICE arrests continue to surge across Washington, workers should know what protections we have in place. Democrats passed the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 2105) to require employers to notify workers within five business days when federal agents issue a notice to inspect workers' employment eligibility documents (an I-9 audit), helping increase transparency and predictability in the workplace. Today, more provisions of the Trump and Republican-backed H.R. 1 go into effect. This bill takes away healthcare from millions of Americans and pushes food assistance costs onto states. In Washington, we're committed to keeping everyone healthy, fed, and safe. We're entering a difficult budget year, made worse by federal legislation like H.R. 1 that hurts people and uses your tax dollars for tax cuts for the ultra wealthy.

For National Public Lands Day, we want to recognize the important investments in our public lands that we make every year in our state budget - supporting state parks and outdoor recreation, protecting habitat for fish and wildlife, working with our Tribal partners to preserve land, forests, and rivers, and so much more. Nature and public lands are a foundational part of what makes Washington state the best place to live in the world, and legislative action is essential to protecting that, now and for generations to come.

People across the state have been calling out for us to defend Washington's free and fair elections from the assault of the Trump administration - and we're winning, again and again. This week, Trump lost yet another lawsuit against Washington state. Whether it's fighting in the courts or passing legislation like SB 5892 to protect voter's private data, you can rest assured we are doing everything we can to protect the right to vote.
