Thank you to leaders like our own Rep. Melanie Morgan (HB 1016, 2021), we are able to officially celebrate the end of slavery in the U.S. here in WA as a paid legal holiday.

Later that year, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making it a federal holiday.

One small step in the fight for a more perfect union.

To our Black Mothers:

Your endurance is not just a trait; it is a masterclass in alchemy. You have a divine ability to turn scarcity into plenty, fear into a fortress, and exhaustion into a lullaby.

Throughout history, you have carried more than just your children, you have carried the weight of legacies, the dreams of ancestors, and the hope of the future. You are the silent architect of survival and the loud, joyful champion of excellence.

Today, we honor the strength that doesn't just "get through" the day, but builds a world within it. We see your quiet sacrifices and your unwavering light.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who make the impossible look like a simple labor of love.🕊️✨

"She is a vessel of grace and a monument of resilience. Her love is the anchor that holds even when the world is in a storm.

BHM originated from "Negro History Week," launched by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926.

President Ford formalized the celebration with a 1976 proclamation, which was later supported by Congress in 1986.

Black Americans have been the heartbeat of our American Story. May this month be an opportunity to tell the stories of our ancestors with pride.

We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. Grateful to Washington State Commission on African American Affairs Commissioner Stanton for her service, persistence, and commitment to healthier Black families and stronger communities in WA. We send our deepest condolences to her friends, family, and the community that mourns her passing.

We are devastated and deeply saddened by the sudden, tragic loss of our Commissioner Sheila Stanton. On Sunday, August 31, Commissioner Stanton was struck by a vehicle as she exited a business. Paramedics intervened, however she did not survive her catastrophic injuries.
Commissioner Stanton was a resident of Kirkland for almost 40 years. An active community member well-known for her efforts, she coordinated and regularly served meals to the unhoused and organized the area's Juneteenth celebration. Bringing that same level of commitment to the Commission, she consistently challenged the answers presented during meetings, refusing to accept cookie-cutter answers. Reappointed for a second term this past January, Commissioner Stanton was the first CAAA commissioner to represent the Kirkland area.
She will be missed greatly.
