Oh my goodness, after yesterday, we are teeming with gratitude, joy, and baby woodchucks! With your help, we rallied to meet our donor goal and raised $15,405 with 210 donors showing their support. We posted a lot on social media yesterday so we'll give you a break until Monday. In the meantime, we hope you continue to enjoy our new Nursery 13 live cam, full of baby foxes. In honor of , and because it appears to be fox day around here, we thought we’d tell you more about the fox pictured in our 8:00 AM post. This young fox from Lincoln was admitted to our hospital on May 14th comatose, suffering from severe head trauma, bruised lungs, a fractured arm, and a fractured vertebra, all likely from being hit by a car. Our veterinary staff quickly started tests and supportive care, including IV fluids, oxygen therapy, and pain medications, to do everything we could to save her life. After several days in our ICU and gradual stabilization of her symptoms, she was well enough to undergo surgery to repair her fractured humerus. Dr. Carter performed an external fixation surgery on May 20th and she has been steadily improving ever since! It will take several weeks for her arm to heal and before she can join the rest of the raucous fox crew – in the meantime, our clinic staff continues her care, which includes pin management, laser therapy, medications, and regular rechecks to ensure she has the best possible outcome! Wait – of course there's a story behind this Virginia opossum and her mini-me. But first - can we take a moment to appreciate how ADORABLE they are?

This mom and her 10 tiny joeys were admitted to our wildlife hospital in late April. Mom was suffering from an affliction that so many of our adult opossum patients have – lead toxicity. If you follow us, you’ve seen many other cases of wild patients with lead, either as their primary illness, or in conjunction with another injury. Opossums get lead toxicity by eating invertebrates in soil that is contaminated with deposits of lead from factories and leaded gas emissions. This heavy metal persists for decades in the environment and is taken up by insects and other animals that are then eaten by larger animals. Lead toxicity causes lethargy, neurologic & digestive issues, and eventually death in our opossum patients. Even at sub-lethal levels, lead can weaken opossums enough that they are more vulnerable to predators and accidents like vehicle collisions.

After a month of chelation therapy and supportive care, this mom is well on her way to recovery. We expect that in the next few weeks, she and her babies will once again be roaming free in the wild!

Monitoring our wild patients for lead exposure benefits more than just the patients we see. The data we collect also contributes to human and environmental health monitoring. We work with our collaborators in public health and wildlife conservation to gather data and conduct research that not only benefits our wild patients, but all of the wildlife and people of Nebraska.

It’s lunchtime, and what better way to celebrate Day, and lunch, by checking out some of the sweetest babies at the Baldwin Wildlife Center! In the month of May alone, we have taken in more than 2,100 wild animals in need, most of which have been babies. May is traditionally our busiest month of the year and we are on track to break all of our previous May admission records (stay tuned for final numbers). From ducklings to raccoons to opossums – we do our best to care for wildlife across the state of Nebraska!

So far in 2026, we have admitted more than 4,020 animals! Our patients include raccoons, opossums, coyotes, fox, bobcats, squirrels, turtles, beaver, bats, snakes and dozens of bird species! On an average day in May (our busiest month of the year), our team navigates everything from providing wildlife assistance to dozens of people and educating future wildlife professionals to receiving more than 100 patients per day. On the best days, we’re also releasing dozens of animals that are returning home to the wild after care at The Baldwin Wildlife Center!

“Let nature take its course.” When 90% of our patients are harmed by improperly discarded fishing gear, gunshot injuries, window strikes, vehicle collisions, plastic pollution, tree trimming accidents, and many other man-made obstacles, the situation is no longer natural. They’re the direct result of human-created hazards that animals have no evolutionary context to navigate. “Let nature take its course” doesn’t work.

Bud Crawford – the feisty comeback kit – has finally returned to the wild! We first shared his story last year when he arrived emaciated and struggling with a pelvic fracture, a bullet lodged in his throat, and a case of mange that left his fur patchy and his skin and eyes irritated and infected. Despite the slew of challenges he’d endured in the first year of life, he never exhibited the skittish behavior we see in most foxes – he was ready to fight until the day we opened his soft release enclosure.

There's always a few patients we can’t help but worry about after release day... but not this guy. His strength, resilience and unmistakable grit leave us confident that he has exactly what it takes to thrive where he belongs.
