A big shout out and thank you to Milacek Monuments for their continued support of preservation efforts at Prospect Hill Cemetery!

In addition to the preservation work currently being completed through our NSORG-funded preservation project, the Milacek team has also taken the opportunity to reset and stabilize several smaller monuments while working on site. Their commitment to preserving these historic memorials reflects the same passion for preservation that drives our volunteers and preservation program.

The monument pictured is just one example of a marker that was carefully reset and returned to a stable, upright position.

As preservation work continues throughout the cemetery, we are launching a dedicated preservation fundraising effort to help expand the impact of the work already underway. Every additional dollar raised while this project is active helps us preserve more monuments, stabilize more markers, and protect more of Omaha's history.

Another productive preservation workday at Prospect Hill Cemetery!

Today, members of the Preservation Committee installed four new military-issued grave markers honoring veterans buried at Prospect Hill. We replaced two broken, illegible markers and the other two were for veterans who had no marker, ensuring these veterans' service continues to be properly recognized and remembered.

The work was completed by just three volunteers—all members of the Prospect Hill Cemetery Board of Trustees. While we accomplished a great deal, we would love to have additional volunteers join us for future preservation projects.

Our next preservation workday is Saturday, July 18. We expect to have additional military-issued grave markers to install and may have other preservation and maintenance projects underway as well.

No special experience is required—we will provide guidance and training.

Every marker set, every monument preserved, and every volunteer hour helps protect the history of Prospect Hill Cemetery for future generations.

🪦 WATCH HISTORY BE PRESERVED LIVE

During this year’s Memorial Day Observance at Prospect Hill Cemetery, visitors will have the opportunity to watch a live monument preservation demonstration at the grave of Friedrich Wilhelm Schmidt.

This remarkable tree-stump-style monument has suffered decades of weathering, settling, and biological growth — but on Memorial Day, preservationist Shannon Justice will demonstrate how historic grave markers are carefully reset, stabilized, and cleaned to help protect them for future generations.

Preserving monuments like this is an important part of Prospect Hill’s mission to honor Omaha’s history and the people buried here.
