On this day in 1978, the Longest Walk began — a 3,200-mile march from Alcatraz Island in California to Washington, D.C. Led by Native activists, spiritual leaders, and allies, the Longest Walk was a direct response to proposed federal legislation threatening to dismantle tribal sovereignty and roll back treaty rights. Over five months, walkers raised national awareness of Indigenous struggles and delivered a powerful message to Congress: Native rights and homelands are not negotiable. Their efforts led to the defeat of several anti-Indian bills and helped secure passage of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. The Longest Walk remains a symbol of Indigenous resilience, activism, and the ongoing fight for justice.
NCAI honors all those who walked, organized, and supported this historic movement, and we remain committed to advancing tribal sovereignty and protecting Native rights.

It was a great day, ITSC did great, Cornelius with Student Leadership, Involvement and Inclusion did an amazing job, and it’s always great to see their Executive Director Taricka Barton, who always takes the time to show up for the students and community events. Special shout out to TMES leader/mentor Ed Zendejas. If not for him and Cindy Krafka, (and the support of James Freeman) there likely wouldn’t be a Wambli Sapa Memorial Powwow. They brought this event back 14 years ago, basically grassroots style. Ed paid what he had in this raffle/popcorn bucket. It’s important to look back at these types of events and honor those who made them possible. It was good to see him receive an honor. He deserves it. The students do too, it’s a lot of work while taking classes, thank you to everyone involved.

We love that Dr. Reyes-Nunez has joined our sister program, Emergency Management and Disaster Science. She thinks outside of the box for ways to engage students, taking the time to put great opportunities like this together for the students! If you are interested joining the UNO community, a great place to start is our Tribal Management and Emergency Services Certificate. These courses can be taken online or in person, taught by two lawyers from the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Contact Sarah for any questions [email protected].

So proud and grateful to have her around!
It is our honor to announce: Dr. Reyna Reyes-Nunez (Liz)
A hearty congratulations goes to Liz, who successfully defended her dissertation defense this week. Her dissertation was titled: Women and Climate Change Policy in Latin America through the Advocacy Coalition Framework, and her findings highlight the pivotal role of feminist principles in shaping women’s advocacy, driving both individual actions and collective efforts.
Dr. Reyes-Nunez, an instructor with UNO's Emergency Management Department, defended her dissertation to her committee including UNO's Dr. Yu-Che Chen, Dr. Jodi Benenson, Dr. Cristian Dona, and past UNO faculty, Dr. Tom Jamieson who is now with Victoria University of Wellington. She is our 74th graduate of our PHD program, which started in 1995.
We couldn't be prouder of Dr. Reyes-Nunez and we are anticipating the incredible work, research, and expertise she will bring to the field as she starts on her journey with her PhD.🎈🎈 UNO Graduate Studies UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies - OLLAS
