Ever wonder how our people hear about an election? A lot of the time it is a neighbor. Not a mailer, not a commercial, a neighbor.

This Thursday, October 8, from 5 to 8 pm CT, is our last Postcards for Progress before the election. We are writing postcards to Black voters across Douglas County. If you have been meaning to get involved, this is your chance.

We bring the postcards, the script, the pens, and the food. You bring yourself and a friend or 3. No experience needed.

Every postcard goes to a Black voter here in Douglas County, from a neighbor instead of a campaign.

In Douglas County you can vote in person at the Election Commission office, 12220 W Center Rd, Omaha, starting today, weekdays through November 2. Go when it works for you, skip the line, and bring somebody.

What does it cost to keep a baby in daycare in Nebraska? More than a year of college. Infant care in a center runs about $14,106 a year, roughly $5,000 more than in-state tuition at a four-year public university.

Childcare is not a luxury, it is what makes working possible. The people we elect decide what gets funded.

In Douglas County, how long you live can depend on which side of town you live on. Life expectancy is 71.0 years in 68111 in North Omaha and 82.9 years in 68130 in West Omaha. That is an 11.9 year difference between two ZIP codes a few miles apart.

The three ZIP codes where people live the shortest lives are also the three with the largest Black populations.

That did not happen by accident. It follows decades of decisions about where clinics get built, where pharmacies stay open, and which neighborhoods get grocery stores.

Those are decisions made through policy. We get a say in who makes those decisions.

Tonight is the night. We are writing postcards from 5 to 8 pm, and there is a seat at the table with your name on it.

You do not need any experience, and you do not need to stay the whole time. Come after work, come for twenty minutes, come with a friend. We have the postcards, the script, the pens, and the food. The address is in the RSVP link.
