Today, the Oneida Nation community gathered to honor Indigenous Peoples' Day through reflection, culture, language, and unity.
The day began with a traditional To***co Burning Ceremony led by Dr. Artley Skenandore Jr., followed by a community program featuring Tribal leadership, the Oneida Nation School Singers, remarks recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day, and reflections on Wisconsin Executive Order #136.
Signed by Governor Tony Evers on Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2021, the Executive Order formally acknowledges and apologizes for Wisconsin's historical role in the Indian boarding school system, supports healing and truth-telling efforts, and strengthens government-to-government relationships with Native Nations.
As we honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, we also celebrate the language, teachings, and traditions that continue to guide future generations.
Yawʌʔkó (thank you) to everyone who joined us in this meaningful gathering!
A good mind. A good heart. A strong fire.
