This week 40 years ago blues/gospel musician Flora Molton and her protege Eleanor Ellis played a show at Hartwick. The two met in 1983 when Ellis chauffered Molton, who was partially blind, to a music festival. Molton continued as a street performer into her 80s, until her death in 1990. Ellis is still active and is a celebrated master of country and Piedmont blues.

President Richard Detweiler's first message to the Hartwick community on September 11, 2001. In ensuing days and weeks many exchanges took place on campus and opinions were voiced, often via the student newspaper. Detweiler was proud of Hartwick's "immediate and overwhelming response," which included professors helping us to interpret global events, counselors and chaplains providing personal support, a candlelight vigil organized by students, and many volunteers making phone calls to track down students' loved ones.
