5th grade library classes have begun a Media Literacy unit, and - following our discussions of Misinformation & Disinformation in the form of news, videos, photos & memes - this week we discussed Artificial Intelligence. We discussed its current benefits and drawbacks, how it is sometimes used maliciously, and how the use of AI Chatbots can seem enticing but should ALWAYS be preceded by conversations with the adults at home; most AI Chatbot sites require users to be at least 13, if not 18. Families, are you having conversations at home about AI? 🤖💻🤖💻

This week, as part of our study of Caldecott Award winning picture books (awarded as such for outstanding artwork), 2nd grade library classes read "Home in a lunchbox," the author's true story of adapting to a new country & school as a child by sharing her love of Asian food with classmates. So naturally we ate lo mein...with chopsticks! 🥢🥡🥡

Kindergarten & 1st grade library classes are reading Author of the Month Eve Bunting's "The Pumpkin Fair" and - of course - we just HAVE to eat homemade pumpkin pie afterwards! Some are trying it for the first time, and many seem to love it! 🎃🎃🎃

1st grade library classes recently enjoyed Author of the Month Jacqueline Woodson's "Pecan Pie Baby," about a young girl who is worried that becoming a big sister will mean less attention paid to her by her mother, until she realizes there's plenty of love in her family to go around. So, naturally, we had to try homemade pecan pie for ourselves!

In September, the Valleyview Library's "Celebrating Diversity" book display highlighted immigrants & refugees and the need to support them in our school, community, and world; in October we are celebrating diverse families, featuring photos generously provided by some of the many diverse families that we celebrate in our very own school community! ❤❤❤

This morning, 1st graders enjoyed reading Author of the Month Jacqueline Woodson's "The World Belonged to Us," followed by an activity that asked them to identify various things we did and did not see in the story. What we did see were examples of what makes childrens play ideal: sharing, creativity, kindness, cooperation, & happy faces!

The first week of the new school year has been great, with library classes reviewing what they know about library procedures and eagerly grabbing the hundreds of new books that arrived over the Summer! Doesn't Autumn look good on us? 🍁🍂🍁

Mrs. Marks' 2nd grade class enjoyed their last visit to the library this afternoon, and today we played a review activity using the website "Kahoot!" to see how much they remembered about ALL of the Caldecott award winning picture books we read together this year! Their class did a lot of reading this year, as they signed-out 460 library books!

Mrs. Bellen's 3rd grade library class made their last visit of the school year this afternoon, during which we completed a Digital Citizenship review activity using the website "Kahoot!" This class loves reading, as they signed-out 700 library books this year, the 3rd most of any class in the school!
