🌱🍅 Harvest Party: Growing Community Through Gardening!

That’s a wrap on another growing season! This past Saturday, our OSU Extension Malheur County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden hosted its final harvest of the season, with volunteers from the Oregon Food Bank and Oregon Child Development Coalition Malheur County joining us to help bring in the last of the produce.

A portion of the harvest was shared with OCDC’s food pantry, helping connect fresh, locally grown produce with families in our community. 🧡

A special thank you to the Oregon Food Bank-Southeast Oregon Services for its continued support, and to our dedicated Master Gardener volunteers and community partners for making this season a success. We’re grateful for everyone who contributed their time and energy to help our garden grow!🌻🍅🫑

Q: When should I harvest my pumpkins? 🎃

A: For winter squash such as pumpkins, you can harvest them when the skin is hardened. Use your thumb nail to puncture the outer skin. If it is hard and you cannot make an indentation, then you can harvest. If you are going to use the pumpkins for eating, you might leave them on the vine until the first frost this fall, which can make them sweeter to the taste.

♻️ From used drip tape to fuel!

Drip irrigation plays an important role in agriculture across the Treasure Valley, but managing used drip tape after the growing season continues to be a challenge for growers.

Researchers at Oregon State University are exploring an innovative approach using pyrolysis to convert used agricultural drip tape into a diesel-like fuel. Recently, drip tape pyrolysis was demonstrated at the OSU Malheur Experiment Station, showcasing the research and its potential applications for agriculture. 🚜♻️

And meet The Onionator! 🧅 Researchers developed this pilot-scale pyrolysis system to help take the research to the next level.

For Treasure Valley growers, this research could lead to new options for managing agricultural plastic waste, reducing the amount of used drip tape requiring disposal, and potentially turning that waste into a useful resource. 🌱

What do you think about turning agricultural waste plastic into fuel? 👇

🧅 Not all onions are created equal!

A look inside the Malheur Experiment Station Onion Field Day, where 47 onion varieties were featured this year, showcasing how different varieties perform under local growing conditions.

From yield and maturity to quality and overall performance, these trials help turn research into practical information growers can use when making production decisions. 🌱

Now the important question: Which do you prefer? Red, yellow, or white onions? 👇🔴🟡⚪️
