As National Principal's Month continues, today we highlight Dr. Emily Grace, principal at Northside Intermediate School!
Q: What inspired you to enter education, and how did you progress into the role of principal?
A: "The answer to that is pretty easy. I come from a family of educators. My dad was the principal of Brown here in Opelika when I was a little girl and I attended Jeter. My mom was a teacher at Jeter. So it was in my blood. I have two brothers; my older brother is a principal in Dale County, and my younger brother works at Auburn University. So education was a no-brainer for me. I was a teacher first, and then moved into the instructional coach role here at Northside. Then they created a 'lead teacher' role, and I did that, and then this opened up and I was lucky enough to stay at this school where I know the kids and staff."
Q: What's something you're most proud of at Northside this year?
A: "It's just the sense of family that we have here. We have a really good relationship with our parents. We start the year with me telling all of our teachers that I want them to treat their kids the way they would want their own kids treated. That includes building relationships, reaching out to parents, and involving them in all the decision-making. We're a team here, and it's going to take the student, the parent and me for things to work."
Q: What is something you want the Opelika community to know about the work the principals in the system do every day?
A: "I think they'd be shocked at all the roles the principal actually does. We're counseling along with our school counselor. We're trying to be supportive of the teachers and the kids. I think principals have a tough job, but it's extremely rewarding. I wouldn't change that for anything. I love my job, I love working here, and every day is different."
