đźš’Fire Prevention 2026đźš’
Got to spend some time this morning with the students and staff at Kids World. Hopefully these kids took home some fire prevention knowledge and demonstrated it to their families. Most of these preschoolers we’re excited to see us. Always a pleasure to spend time with these kids and this is why we have the best job in the world!

Thanks to the Opp Utility/Electric crews who spent countless hours restoring power after Hurricane Isaias came into our area Friday night. They along with other Utility and City departments worked together to get Opp back open for business. Last night they were back restoring power in the area of Highway 52 and Saunders Road due to another live wire down. Hope everyone has a great week and stay safe!!

Alabama Fire Departments Deploying Fire and Water Rescue Teams to Gulf Coast Ahead of Hurricane Isiah

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL – Fire departments from across Alabama are preparing to deploy fire suppression and water rescue resources to the Gulf Coast ahead of Hurricane Isiah. The deployment is being coordinated through the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs Mutual Aid Consortium (AAFCMAC) in anticipation of potential impacts from the storm.

A five-engine team, supported by a Battalion Chief and a rescue transport unit, is being assembled with personnel and apparatus from the following departments:
Chelsea Fire Department – Battalion Chief and Fire Engine
Auburn Fire Department – Fire Engine
Opelika Fire Department - Fire Engine
Morris Fire Department – Fire Engine
Irondale Fire Department – Fire Engine
Pelham Fire Department – Fire Engine
Cahaba Valley Fire Department – Rescue Transport Unit

In addition to the engine team, Mountain Brook, Hoover, Trussville, Vestavia Hills, and Calera Fire Departments are preparing to deploy specialized water rescue teams to support potential flooding and swiftwater rescue operations.

This deployment marks the first time resources have been pre-deployed under the AAFCMAC mutual aid agreement, which was established following Hurricane Sally in 2020. The agreement was developed to improve coordination, resource sharing, and the ability of Alabama fire departments to rapidly mobilize personnel and equipment during major emergencies and disasters.

Participating teams are scheduled to depart Thursday, October 8, and remain deployed through Sunday, October 11, depending on weather conditions, operational needs, and requests for assistance.

The teams will be prepared to assist local emergency responders with fire suppression, emergency medical services, water rescue, and other response operations as conditions permit. Personnel will be positioned in safe locations during the storm and deployed into affected communities when conditions allow.

The AAFCMAC continues to coordinate with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, local emergency management agencies, and participating fire departments to ensure resources are deployed efficiently and safely.

Members of the media seeking additional information or interviews with participating departments are encouraged to contact the respective department’s Public Information Officer (PIO).

Today has been a heartbreaking day for our community

At approximately 1:37 p.m., the Coffee County 911 Center received a 911 call reporting a possible drowning involving two missing individuals at the bridge at the intersection of Alabama Highway 87 and Alabama Highway 84 near Elba.
Responding agencies quickly arrived on scene and determined that two individuals had gone underwater and did not resurface. The preliminary investigation indicates that 21-year-old Benji Falvo of Elba went underwater while attempting to cross the river. His stepfather, David Thomas Rubright of Elba, entered the water in an attempt to rescue him and also went underwater.
At approximately 5:00 p.m., Mr. Rubright was recovered. At approximately 6:13 p.m., Mr. Falvo was recovered.
This incident remains under investigation by the Elba Police Department, the Coffee County Coroner’s Office, and the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
We would like to thank all of the agencies that responded and worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon and evening, including Elba Fire Department, New Brockton Fire Department, Enterprise Rescue, Enterprise Air 1 and Air 2, Coffee County EMA, Bullock Fire Department, Opp Fire Department Dive Team, Houston County Dive Team, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol/Game Wardens, and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office.
Both individuals will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsies as part of the ongoing investigation.
On behalf of the Coffee County Coroner’s Office, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Falvo and Rubright families. We ask everyone to please keep these families, their friends, and all of the first responders involved in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Out of respect for the families and the integrity of the investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
