10/14/2026
The Orange Fire Department is proud to announce Timothy Matthews as our new fire chief, effective October 14, 2026.
Chief Matthews is a third-generation firefighter, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Ed Matthews, who retired as deputy fire chief in Warwick, Massachusetts, and his father, Donald Matthews, who retired as Warwick's fire chief. Chief Matthews began his own fire service career in Warwick in 1998.
After moving to Orange, he joined the Orange Fire Department as an on-call firefighter in June 2003, where he earned his EMT certification and was promoted to Lieutenant. In June 2008, he became a full-time firefighter/EMT and went on to earn his Massachusetts paramedic certification in 2010.
Throughout his career, Chief Matthews has responded to countless fire, rescue, and medical emergencies, including numerous lifesaving incidents. In November 2024, he was awarded the Medal of Valor for assisting in the rescue and removal of a victim from a house fire.
Chief Matthews has remained committed to education and professional development, earning an Associate Degree in Fire Science while continuing toward his bachelor's degree. Since 2023, he has also helped develop and lead the Ralph C. Mahar Regional School Firefighter I/II Program, helping educate and prepare the next generation of firefighters.
In September 2024, he was appointed acting captain of Group 1 and was officially promoted to captain in March 2025. During this time, he took on increasing responsibilities in department operations, staffing, training, and leadership, helping prepare him for his new role as fire chief.
Chief Matthews would like to sincerely thank the Orange Select Board and Town Manager for their confidence and the opportunity to lead the department. He also extends his appreciation to the past and present members of the Orange Fire Department for their friendship, mentorship, and support throughout his career.
He would also like to extend his sincere appreciation to the fire chiefs of neighboring communities for their encouragement, guidance, friendship, and continued support. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experience has been invaluable, particularly during his transition into this new leadership role. Chief Matthews looks forward to continuing these strong working relationships and strengthening regional cooperation among departments.
Most importantly, he would like to thank his wife, Cally; daughters, Gabriella and Mackenzie; son, Rhett; and mother, Cheryl, for their continued love, understanding, and support throughout the many years of dedication and sacrifice that come with a career in the fire service.
As he begins this new chapter, Chief Matthews looks forward to honoring the department's traditions, supporting its members, strengthening Fire-Rescue-EMS services, and continuing to serve the residents of Orange.
Please join us in congratulating Fire Chief Timothy Matthews on his promotion and wishing him continued success in his new role!
