Commemorating LA's Chinese Massacre, possibly the worst lynching in US history Monday marks the 145th anniversary of the Chinese Massacre, when vigilantes tortured and hanged at least 18 Chinese men and boys in LA's Chinatown.

Some had been buried by the coal company, but these had not. Many were in pieces. These were bodies of their friends, sons, fathers, brothers and cousins, murdered by a mob of white coal miners."

June 23, 1982. Thirty-four years ago, Vincent Jen Chin died from a brutal beating by Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz. Four days earlier, Chin and the two other men got into an argument and bar fight when they mistook him for a Japanese man; he was Chinese. Ebens and Nitz beat Vincent into a coma, and then four days later he died in the hospital. This was the day he was supposed to get married. You would think that for this unspeakable crime, Ebens and Nitz would have gotten a long sentence in jail, but instead Ebens and Nitz walked away with three years of probation and a $3,000 fine. Apparently, this was the price for murdering a Chinese man in America. This sparked anger in the community, and for the first time, the term 'Asian-American' was being used. Before, there was just 'Chinese-Americans' or 'Vietnamese-American', and there was no unity. But after all the rage everyone felt, they came together. Furious Asian-Americans took to the streets in protest letting it be known that the verdict in the Chin case was unjust. Vincent Chin's death caused a movement, a movement of Asian-Americans standing up for their rights. Today, we remember the hate crime that had no punishment: the death of Vincent Jen Chin.

June 19, 1982. Thirty-four years ago, Vincent Jen Chin was brutally murdered by two men who worked in the American automobile industry in Detroit, Michigan. Vincent and his friends went out for his bachelor party, for he was supposed to get married soon. Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz mistook Vincent for someone who was Japanese, and blamed him for the decline of the American auto industry, while the Japanese auto industry was booming. After spitting racial slurs at Vincent, the men got into a bar fight, and Vincent ended up leaving. Still angry, Ebens and Nitz followed him, and even paid someone $20 to find out where he had gone. Ebens and Nitz eventually found Chin at a McDonald's eating with his friend. The two men grabbed a baseball bat out of the bed of their truck and ran into the McDonald's to attack Chin. Vincent tried to escape, but while Nitz held him, Ebens bludgeoned him with the baseball bat. He was hit so hard, his skull had cracked open, his brain literally spilling onto the concrete. Vincent's friend held him until the ambulance arrived, and before slipping into a coma, Vincent said "It's not fair." Today, we remember the savage beating of Vincent Jen Chin.
