Today, we recognize Florida’s Emancipation Day. This day highlights the resilience of those who endured slavery. Let us honor the legacy of freedom and reflect on this milestone in our state's history!

Today, May 20, 2026, is Florida Emancipation Day. On this day in 1865, Emancipation was proclaimed in Tallahassee, 11 days after the end of the Civil War and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation first issued by President Abraham Lincoln declared freedom for enslaved people in Southern states. Florida Emancipation Day commemorates a pivotal moment in the state’s history.
