Did you hear? The American Academy of Pediatrics shifted their recommendations for COVID-positive birthing people and *NOW* are recommending keeping them WITH their well newborns.
New guidelines recommend keeping COVID-positive birthing people WITH their well newborns, walking back earlier restrictions.
This is bittersweet because of all the routine separation that has been happening and the trauma that’s already been created by knee-jerk recommendations in the U.S., where our maternal and infant health practices tend towards disrupting and disrespecting the mother-baby bond. The first bond.
And yet, this will make it much easier for advocates to push for local policy that keeps newborns with the birthing parent.
Go forth and advocate!

"If it’s not a “Hell yes!” then it’s a big fat NO.
Being bullied or coerced into making a decision is not informed consent.
That’s manipulative and abusive tactics that stem from someone having a sense of power over another and a lack of dignity and respect of patient autonomy."
in birth, in s*x, in retail, in every day conversation: coercion is NOT consent.
if someone says no, the answer is NO.
full stop.

Please contact ImprovingBirth ASAP if you know of any pregnant people who have been confirmed as having COVID-19 or are a hospital administrator (or know of one) who is interested in developing protocols for the care of pregnant people infected with the virus.
** URGENT **
Please repost and share!
We have learned of one confirmed case of a pregnant person in the United States that has been infected with COVID-19 and has been put into ICU.
We urgently need your help with 2 very important things:
- Please reach out to us with any details about other pregnant individuals who have been confirmed as having COVID-19, hospitalized, and in ICU.
- Contact us if you are a hospital administrator or know of one who is interested in developing protocols for the care of pregnant people who have tested positive for COVID-19.
These numbers are not being shared widespread, and we need your help to pinpoint if and how many other pregnant people are infected. We respect patient privacy and want to connect care providers in the same situation. Help us gather as much information as possible. Please send us an email at [email protected] or private message here on Facebook if you have any insight about the above.
Thank you for your help in getting the word out.

Some great tips about navigating childbirth in a crisis, especially for Black birthing people.
"Like hurricane season, this moment of preparing for and hoping to avoid what could be catastrophic can exacerbate the stress and anxiety that pregnant Black people feel, but there are actions and options to alleviate these trauma responses." - Joia Crear-Perry
