Chief Justice John D. Couriel has proclaimed October 11-17 as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Week! In honor of this proclamation, we want to highlight our own ADR services here at the Ninth.

One of the most common forms of ADR is mediation, where a neutral and impartial facilitator works with the parties to encourage the resolution of a dispute. It's an informal and collaborative process that helps the parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement, often without the need for a trial.

Through our Dispute Resolution Services, we provide mediation in both Orange and Osceola Counties for a variety of cases — including county civil, small claims up to $8,000, evictions, and family cases. Unlike a trial, where a judge makes the final decision, mediation allows the parties involved to have control of the outcome.

Whether it's helping families work through difficult issues or giving the parties an opportunity to settle a financial dispute, mediation plays an important role in helping those we serve find a path forward.

Judge Sanders-Morency recently welcomed a group of students from Potter's Touch Knowledge Center into the Jon B. Morgan Osceola County Courthouse for a day full of learning!

Even though court was already in recess for the day, Judge Sanders-Morency made sure to make the most of their time. To kick off the day, Judge Sanders-Morency hosted a Q&A session, where she answered tons of great questions, shared her journey to the bench, and explained what it's like to be a judge. The students also had the opportunity to hear from the Clerk's Office and the courtroom deputies, learning more about their roles in the courthouse.

To wrap up the day, the students visited the jury room and heard from one of our jury services assistants. It was another great day at the Ninth and the students were so curious about the judicial system. And who knows? We might see some of these students working in the legal field one day!

Our Court Programs Manager, Lisa Vargas, was recently appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to serve on the Problem-Solving Court Certification Committee!

The Certification Committee oversees the Problem-Solving Court Certification Program, which works to ensure that Florida's Problem-Solving Courts maintain best practices, enhance operations statewide, and improve participant outcomes. As a member of the committee, Lisa will work alongside her colleagues to review certification applications, conduct site visit assessments, and make final certification decisions.

Lisa will serve a two-year term through September 30, 2028. Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved appointment!

This past week, Judge Craner welcomed a group of students from Barry University's Criminal Law Society into his courtroom for a behind-the-scenes look at the Ninth! After observing several plea hearings and sentencings, Judge Craner hosted a Q&A session and shared his journey to the bench. To wrap up the day, the students observed a jury trial in Judge Chiu's courtroom, where they had the opportunity to observe expert witness testimony and cross examination. It was another great day at the Orange County Courthouse and a wonderful opportunity for these future legal professionals to see the courtroom in action!

Yesterday, during the University of Central Florida's (UCF) Legal Studies 50th Anniversary Celebration, Cindy Schmidt, general counsel at the Ninth Circuit, was inducted into the inaugural Legal Studies Hall of Fame!

The Hall of Fame recognizes distinguished UCF alumni whose professional achievements, service, and support have helped shape and strengthen UCF's Legal Studies community. Throughout her career, Cindy has made a lasting impact within Central Florida. From practicing as an attorney for many years to teaching the next generation of legal professionals, she has dedicated her career to the law and to serving others.

Cindy's commitment to UCF's Legal Studies program continued long after she graduated with her bachelor's degree. Shortly after graduating with her Juris Doctor from the University of Florida, she returned home to practice law. She later spent nearly a decade as an adjunct professor at UCF before becoming the founding director of UCF's Center for Law and Policy, where she worked to emphasize the importance of service and promote innovative ideas that advance the legal field and benefit the community.

Today, Cindy continues to make an impact through her work at the Ninth Circuit, serving our courts and the residents of Orange and Osceola counties. We are so proud to see her receive this special recognition. Congratulations, Cindy!
