Thank you MetroPlan_Orlando for marking White Cane Awareness Day! Today we celebrate the rights of blind + visually impaired people to move freely and independently with a cane or guide dog, which is affirmed by White Cane laws in all fifty states. By participating in today’s Blind Experience, we also got a chance to better understand what crossing a street is like for our blind + visually impaired community members.

"Two women have filed a federal civil lawsuit accusing former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz and two others of participating in an alleged s*x trafficking scheme involving young women, drugs and traveling across state lines.

The allegations are the latest chapter in Gaetz’s high-profile s*x scandal that ultimately derailed his nomination by President Trump as U.S. Attorney General and also led him to resign from Congress in 2024. His departure came as a bi-partisian House Ethics Committee was in the final stages of an investigation into his alleged misconduct."

The lawsuit alleges the two women were supplied with drugs, traveled across state lines and were paid to have s*x with men, including Gaetz.

"Snowbean, the popular lakeside coffee and dessert shop at 5310 E. Colonial Drive, has permanently closed, announcing its final day of business with little warning.

In an Instagram post on October 14, the business told customers it would close at 5 p.m. that same day.

“This is just as surprising to us as it is to you,” the Snowbean team shared.

What began as a small dessert shop serving customers of neighboring Izziban Sushi & BBQ grew into a popular gathering spot for studying, working, first dates, and late-night hangouts. Its lakeside patio became a destination of its own, with visitors attaching padlocks to the waterfront railing, often marked with names, initials, and messages, creating a growing collection of memories overlooking the water."

“Medicare Advantage plans are shrinking their footprint across the Sunshine State in 2027, forcing returning enrollees to re-examine their coverage before the Dec. 7 deadline.

Florida leads the nation in total Medicare Advantage plan discontinuations for 2027, dropping 8.7% from 611 plan offerings to 560 as insurers pull out of underperforming counties.

“We are getting a lot of people calling because their plan has been canceled,” said Beatrice Scafidi, SHINE liaison with the Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast.

Rising care costs and shrinking profits are leading major carriers like Humana and UnitedHealthcare to eliminate some plans or shift others from PPOs to HMOs. Fifteen regional insurers, including some Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, have received federal approval to cap enrollment in 2027.”
