Due to the misuse, abuse and vandalism of our public restrooms located in the hatchery parking lot, they will be closed until further notice. We apologize for every inconvenience this might cause. However, if you are inside the gates for a tour or to visit us, you are absolutely welcome to use the restrooms located in the visitor center.

It's a love story.
In case you ever wondered...Male chinook have a much bigger pronounced jaw called a kype. These larger, pronounced kypes, with teeth, allow them to battle for dominance over competing males while spawning activities commence. Females have smaller mouths, no battle jaws and much smaller teeth... her job is to secure her eggs in a redd...all while looking simply fabulous.

When: Tuesday, 8/18 and Wednesday, 8/19 8am

Big, beautiful, and locally grown, These brave travelers are back after a few years of touring/sightseeing (aka surviving!) the oceans to provide eggs and milt to help us spawn the next generation of salmon.
Come see the spawning action at Dworshak National Fish Hatchery!
The ponds outside are all full of fry, so plan to check them out as well!

Disclaimer:
Be prepared for any of the following side effects when seeing these huge fish: gasping in amazement, jaw drops, cheering for the full baskets, pointing at the big one, ooh-ing and finally, ahh-ing. These are temporary reactions and will fade, but your experience from watching and learning will certainly linger.

First Spring Chinook spawn of the year at Dworshak and boy, we had some beautiful whoppers return! With literally hundreds of fish to sort and process today, we will be here spawning until 2 or so! Come visit us today, and most tuesdays for spawning activities!

🥪FOOD: the Teweepuu Center, managed by the Nez Perce Tribe, will have some food items for sale. However, in case they sell out, it is advisable that you pack lunches and bring water bottles! And sunscreen!
🛑 PLEASE REMEMBER: Park at the top of the hill and catch the shuttle down to the pond unless you have access needs. This will ensure parking below does not fill up.

Where: Tunnel Pond, 1 Mile east of Orofino, Idaho
Who: All Kids 13 and younger
What: a day of fishing! Catch and take up to 2 fish with them! Gear and Bait provided!

The fine print:
The annual Kids’ Fishing Day, sponsored by the Dworshak Fisheries Complex and Nez Perce Tribe, will be held on Friday, May 8, from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. The Nez Perce Tribe and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host the event at Tunnel Pond on Lower Fords Creek Road, approximately 1 mile east of Orofino, Idaho.

Lower parking is very limited at the pond and is restricted to anglers/families requiring close access. Other parking will be at the top of the hill from the pond. A shuttle bus will be offered from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill and will make round trips through out the day.

Children 13 years and under will be able to catch and keep 2 rainbow trout. Please remember that all children must be accompanied by an adult. Poles, Bait, tackle and ice will be provided, but due to the overwhelming response, please bring your own fishing poles if you have them. Anglers 14 years of age and older may purchase Tunnel Pond fishing permits from local vendors, or online at www.nptfishpermits.com.

The Dworshak National Fish Hatchery and the Nez Perce Tribe are excited to provide this opportunity for young people to experience the joy of fishing and spend the day outside!

Hatchery Personnel POV: Watching you grow from eggs to smolts, we're so proud of you and the little fish you've become. And although we'll miss you, you're destined for great things! See you in a few years, little fish — we’ll be waiting!

Fish POV: I'm glad I'm going out at night so predators can't see me...It's my best chance for survival! 500 river miles is a long way to swim to reach the Pacific Ocean...I can't wait to eat some seafood!

Come join us for another steelhead spawn day!
WHEN: March 3, 9am
WHERE: Dworshak National Fish Hatchery
WHAT: Big B-Run Steelhead!

Spawning sheds a very cool perspective on fish lifecycle and how hatcheries benefit the fishery as a whole. So, if you have some time on your hands...come hang out with us! Viewing from our indoor spawn deck, you'll see some interesting views of the 'how', and we're here to tell you about the 'why'! Guides will be available for Q/A and we will also have several school groups touring that day! While visiting, you're welcome to take our self-guided tour outside to see Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead smolts, growing for their release in April.
