When firefighters respond to a building fire, their protective gear works hard to shield them from heat and dangerous conditions. But after the fire, that gear may carry harmful contaminants that can't be seen. Through proper decontamination procedures, firefighters clean their gear, equipment, apparatus, and then themselves to reduce exposure to combustion byproducts. These practices are a critical part of keeping firefighters healthy and ready to respond when when the community needs them most.
Orono FD assisted Bangor Maine Fire Department today with a building fire. This photo shows gear being spread out upon their return to the station to start the decon process.
Clean gear. Healthy firefighters. Safer Communities.
