🧡 Let’s turn our school ORANGE for Unity Day!

Tomorrow, October 21, we invite everyone to wear orange to send a message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion!

Celebrated during National Bullying Prevention Month, Unity Day reminds us that each of us plays an important role in creating a school community where everyone feels safe, valued, and included. These values are at the heart of our school’s mission and our commitment to building strong character.

We can’t wait to see our campus filled with orange and “Be Kind” shirts on Wednesday!

Congratulations Mollie & Bluma. Best of luck at state! 🎾

Upcoming Winter Sport-Specific Information & Meetings

Winter registration is now open on MyPaymentsPlus! All students interested in participating in a winter sport are encouraged to attend their upcoming sport-specific informational meeting.

Due to the varying start dates for winter seasons, we will once again not be holding an “All-Sports Information Night.” Instead, each program will host its own meeting to share important information and details about the upcoming season.

Please plan to arrive a few minutes early so meetings can begin on time. Coaches will also provide a handout with important department-wide information that would typically be shared by Mr. Brunner, Director of Athletics and Student Activities, during the large-group session.

Visit the Orono Schools Athletics webpage for additional information, or contact the coach at the email address listed below.

*Denotes athletic teams that may be open to middle school athletes. A tryout or pre-approval may be required before participation on the high school team.

Friday Flashback: Fresh From the Heart 🍎🫑🥗

For generations, providing students with nutritious, delicious meals—and preparing and serving them with heart and dedication—has always been a central part of each school day.

Pictured here are three food service employees preparing food at Orono High School in 1956 and a school lunch menu from 1951 when a meal costs 15¢ per plate!

Do you recognize any of these familiar faces hard at work in the kitchen? Any guesses on what they're prepping?

Today, we’re still serving food fresh from the heart, with the same spirit of care that has always been part of our school kitchens.

Today at the Oliver Grieb Abbott Environmental Learning Center, our elementary students enjoyed a wonderful fall learning experience all about apples! 🍎

Brooke Mattson, a graduate intern from the University of Minnesota studying dietetics and public health, read "I Am an Apple" by Jean Marzollo. She then introduced students to a variety of apples at the display table.

Growing nearby were chestnut crabapples and tiny, tart crabapples that look almost like cherries. Students also got to sample Honeycrisp apples from Cedar Hill Apple Orchard in Hutchinson.

The highlight? A group “apple crunch,” with everyone taking a bite at the same time! 🍏

The experience was organized by Jackie DeRoma, Orono’s Child Nutrition Coordinator, and Lauren Spoke, Orono’s Child Nutrition Specialist, with help from Orono parent Keri Sidle, an Education Specialist with Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom.

It was a fun—and delicious—way to learn about apples and where our food comes from!
