It's starting to feel like fall outside -- and we are reflecting on a magical, wonderful, and productive season of Youth Garden Club! From reaping harvests and donating food... to tending flowers and sowing cover crop -- our young gardeners have been busy this season as they also nurture a sense of community!

What's more, they've enjoyed enrichment in the arts and sciences -- thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and guest gardeners. We've done weaving with natural fibers and materials (thanks, Jessi Sader!); this activity included materials from our garden, exotic animal fibers, birch bark, snake skins, and more! We've made our own garden party hats (thanks, Kris Sader!); children used upcycled materials and newspapers as they adorned their hats with bling! And, much more.

To wrap up our garden season this year, we hosted a tea and pizza party in late Sept. Children and tweens / teens (and families) created their own tea blends from our homegrown herbs and flowers. We owe so much gratitude to the Blagojevic family -- Milos brought his gas-powered pizza oven, and we made garden-side pizzas! Yes; homegrown basil went into that pesto!

Thanks to everyone who participated in or supported our Youth Garden program this year! We'll be putting the garden beds to rest and planning for next year over the coming months.

As we approach autumn, now is a fantastic time to harvest and collect flower, fruit, and vegetable seeds from your lingering garden materials... and save them for next year's planting!

We have a Seed Library at the Orono Public Library, and we welcome all seed donations and swapping. Stop by to take a look, donate seeds, or to grab a few envelopes to store your seeds!

This photo depicts seeds collected by a young gardener in Orono -- it can be fun to sift through withering plants and vines to find the seeds... and to note the differences in seed shape and structure! Photo credit: Lucy and Kelsi Whelden!
