Minnesota is the homeland of 11 federally recognized tribal nations: Seven Anishinaabe reservations (Ojibwe/Chippewa) and four Dakota communities, including the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe which is comprised of six of the seven Ojibwe bands. Indigenous and native history in the region dates back roughly 14,000 to 30,000+ years before the Vikings briefly landed.
The Dakota were considered the dominant group for centuries after the Cheyenne relocated to the Great Plains and before the arrival of the Ojibwe. To learn more, you can explore the history and contemporary stories of Minnesota's Indigenous peoples through resources like the Minnesota Historical Society @ https://www.mnhs.org/historycenter/activities/museum/our-home and by visiting tribal cultural centers and events. We welcome you to join us in observance of our MN heritage on this, Indigenous Peoples Day. * City Hall offices will be closed Monday Oct 12th.
