DOCUMENT SPOTLIGHT: SHERIFF'S DEED

What is a Sheriff's Deed?

A Sheriff's Deed is a deed issued following a Sheriff's sale.

A Sheriff's sale can occur as part of a court proceeding to satisfy a judgment. When real estate is sold through that process, the resulting Sheriff's Deed documents the transfer of the property to the successful purchaser.

The Sheriff's Deed is recorded with the County Recorder's Office and becomes part of the permanent land record.

So if you see a Sheriff's Deed in the county records, it means the property transfer occurred through a Sheriff's sale, not a typical private real estate transaction.

DOCUMENT SPOTLIGHT: POWER OF ATTORNEY

What is a Power of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney allows one person—the principal—to authorize another person—the agent or attorney-in-fact—to act on their behalf.

A Power of Attorney can give an agent authority to handle certain matters, including matters involving real estate, depending on what the document authorizes.

When a Power of Attorney is used in connection with a real estate transaction, it may be recorded with the County Recorder's Office.

A Power of Attorney is a legal document, and the authority it gives depends on the language of the document. If you're considering one, it's a good idea to consult an attorney.

Have you checked for your name in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt?

You might be surprised to find that you have unclaimed funds waiting for you! The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is Iowa’s program for returning unclaimed funds to their rightful owners.

If you find a claim that requires documentation from the County Recorder’s Office, we may be able to help! Our office can provide records such as birth, death, and marriage certificates and other documentation that may be needed to establish your connection to a claim.

Claiming for yourself? Give us a call or stop in, and we can help you find the records you may need.

Claims belonging to a deceased relative? We can help with those records, too, but we will need proof of entitlement before we can provide records for someone else. This helps us make sure we are following the requirements for releasing protected records.

Not sure exactly what documentation you need in order to obtain a birth, death or marriage record for a relative? Call or stop by the Recorder’s Office before ordering records. We can help make sure you have the correct documentation needed to complete your requests.

You may have a little Iowa treasure waiting for you!

DOCUMENT SPOTLIGHT: CHANGE OF TITLE

What is a Change of Title?

Not every change in the ownership or title information for real estate happens through a traditional deed.

A Change of Title is a document used to update the county's transfer records when title to real estate changes in certain circumstances without a traditional conveyance.

This can include situations involving estates, survivorship interests, changes involving entities, or other circumstances recognized under Iowa law.

The Recorder's Office records the document and maintains the public record, while the county Auditor uses the appropriate information to update the transfer records.

A Change of Title may sound simple, but the circumstances behind one can be very different from a typical property sale.

Happy Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Today is an opportunity to reflect on the history that shaped our country, and to recognize the many people and cultures that are part of that history.

We honor the spirit of exploration and discovery while also recognizing the Indigenous peoples who have lived on and cared for these lands for generations. Their cultures, traditions, contributions, and resilience continue to be an important part of our nation’s story.

May today be a reminder to learn from our history, appreciate the diverse perspectives that shape our communities, and recognize the people who came before us.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

HUNTERS: New Treestand Rules for Iowa Public Land

If you hunt deer or turkey on Iowa’s public land, there are some important treestand rules to know before you head out this season!

Tag Your Treestand
Treestands placed on public land MUST have a metal tag attached with the owner’s Iowa DNR-issued Customer Identification Number (CID). The tag must be visible from the ground.

No Permanent Treestands
Permanent treestands may not be constructed on Game Management Areas (State land).

Know When You Can Leave Your Stand
Treestands used for deer or turkey hunting may be left on State land beginning 7 days before the start of the applicable hunting season and must be removed no later than 7 days after the final day of that open season.

A little planning can save you a headache! Before putting up a stand on public land, make sure it is properly tagged and that you are within the allowed timeframe.

Good luck this hunting season, and as always: know the regulations before you head into the field!

Need help with your Iowa DNR Customer Identification Number or hunting licenses? The County Recorder’s Office can help with many DNR licensing needs.

Post 9: What Does the Recorder’s Office Do?

So…what exactly does the County Recorder’s Office do?

As you can see, the answer is: a lot!

From recording real estate documents and preserving public records to issuing vital records, processing marriage applications, registering recreational vehicles, selling hunting and fishing licenses, providing passport services, recording military documents, and helping with genealogy research — our office touches many different parts of our community.

A lot of what we do happens behind the scenes. You may only see us for a few minutes when you stop in to renew a registration or pick up a document, but there are rules, regulations, research, recordkeeping, and attention to detail happening behind that counter every day.

Our goal is to provide accurate, reliable, and helpful service to the people of our county — whether you’re buying a house, getting married, planning a vacation, heading out hunting, researching your family tree, or simply trying to track down an important document.

We’re proud of the work we do, and we’re proud to serve our community.
