🌧️ Rain is forecast over the next several days in Mahaska County.
Given that we’ve already received a sizeable amount of rain, it’s a good time to remember the hazards associated with water covering roadways.
If you come upon a road that is covered with water, don’t take any chances. Turn around and find another route. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. 🚗🌊
Even water that appears shallow can hide dangerous conditions, including washed-out roads, debris, and rapidly moving water.

☀Be prepared for HOT weather this week! ☀

Today begins a hot and humid week across the state. A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of central and southern Iowa, where heat is expected to be most prolonged throughout the week and persistent through the overnights. Several consecutive days of afternoon highs in the mid 90s are possible, along with heat index values from 100-103 and near-record warm overnight low temperatures in some locations. There will also be chances for thunderstorms at times mainly in the overnight and morning hours. Plan ahead this week, stay hydrated, and limit strenuous outdoor activity!

🩸 STOP THE BLEED® TRAINING

Today, we had the opportunity to provide Stop the Bleed training for a local school district.

In an emergency, the first few minutes can be critical. School staff and other community members may be the first people on scene and can take simple, effective actions to help control severe bleeding until emergency responders arrive.

During the training, participants learned how to:

• Recognize life-threatening bleeding
• Apply direct pressure
• Pack a wound when appropriate
• Apply and use a tourniquet
• Understand when and how to take action

Preparedness isn't just about having the right equipment—it's about having the knowledge and confidence to use it when needed.

Thank you to the school district staff and fellow first responder agencies that assisted today and who took the time to train, practice, and prepare.

Mahaska County Emergency Management recently conducted a tabletop exercise with Peoria Christian School focused on emergency preparedness, decision-making, communication, and coordination during a school emergency.

Tabletop exercises provide an opportunity for school leaders and emergency response partners to work through realistic scenarios in a discussion-based environment—without disrupting normal school operations.

The exercise focused on:

* Emergency decision-making and protective actions
* Student and staff accountability
* Communication and coordination
* Coordination with emergency response partners
* Identifying strengths, gaps, and opportunities for improvement

A special thank-you to the agencies that participated and contributed their expertise:

Mahaska County 911 Communications
Mahaska County Sheriff's Office
Jasper County Emergency Management
ADLM Emergency Management Agency

We appreciate the partnership and commitment of everyone involved in strengthening school emergency preparedness.

Exercises like this help schools Plan • Train • Prepare so they are better positioned to respond effectively when an emergency occurs.

🌧️ Turn Around, Don't Drown 🌧️
Heavy rainfall can quickly lead to flash flooding, creating dangerous conditions on roads. Floodwaters may appear shallow, but they can hide washed-out pavement, debris, and strong currents capable of sweeping vehicles off the roadway.

🚗 Remember: • Never drive through flooded roads. • Obey all road closure signs and barricades. • Turn around and find an alternate route. • Allow extra travel time during periods of heavy rain. • Stay informed of weather conditions and local alerts.
Just 12 inches of moving water can carry away many vehicles, and conditions can change rapidly with little warning.
Your destination is not worth risking your life.

⚠️ When Flooded, Turn Around!

Last week, we had the opportunity to teach several CPR/AED and First Aid classes. It's encouraging to see so many people making preparedness a priority by learning lifesaving skills.

Whether you're a parent, coach, teacher, employee, or community member, these skills can make a critical difference during an emergency.

If you're interested in taking a CPR/AED, First Aid, or Stop the Bleed® course, send us a message. We'd be happy to help you find a class or schedule training for your group.
