🚒 TEAMWORK IN ACTION: DIESEL FUEL SPILL RESPONSE

At approximately 9:20am today, the Oswego Fire Department responded to a significant diesel fuel spill in the area of West 1st and West Utica Street., near the Big M Supermarket.

With heavy rainfall threatening to carry fuel into nearby storm drains that discharge into the Oswego River, Firefighters quickly deployed absorbent materials, containment booms, and specialized drain covers to limit the spread of the fuel and protect local waterways.

Due to the extent of the spill, additional resources were requested from Oswego County Fire Services, while several City departments worked together to support containment, traffic control, and cleanup operations. This was a tremendous example of teamwork and interagency cooperation.

The Oswego Fire Department extends its appreciation to the City Of Oswego DPW, Police Department, Code Enforcement, Wastewater, the Oswego County Hazardous Materials Team, Oswego County 911 and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Special recognition goes to Oswego Fire Department's B Shift for their quick response, leadership, coordination, and professionalism.

Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of preparedness, specialized equipment, and strong partnerships among our City departments and regional agencies. 👍

🚨 INCIDENT UPDATE: Multi-Agency Haz-Mat Response in Scriba 🚨

On August 29, 2026, at 17:15, the Oswego County Haz-Mat Team was requested to a residential scene in Scriba to assist Scriba FD.

The incident began as a medical call for two occupants experiencing dizziness and confusion. Initial responding ambulance personnel began experiencing similar symptoms upon entering the structure, at which point they requested the fire department for investigation. Arriving fire personnel recognized the need for additional resources and declared a Haz-Mat incident.

Upon arrival, Haz-Mat personnel, with assistance from Oswego FD, Minetto FD, and Cody FD deployed specialized air-metering equipment to monitor the environment. It was determined that a household pesticide agent had been inadvertently aerosolized inside the residence, resulting in toxic vapors.Teams successfully mitigated the hazard.

The two occupants and the affected ambulance crew members were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and are expected to make a full recovery. No firefighter injuries were reported.

⚠️ Public Safety Reminder:

The Oswego County Fire Service reminds all residents to strictly adhere to manufacturer instructions when handling household cleaning chemicals and pesticide agents.

- Always read product labels completely prior to application.

- Do not aerosolize, spray, or mix chemicals unless explicitly directed by the manufacturer.

- Ensure adequate ventilation during indoor use

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐶

Today, we are celebrating a truly rare and elite legacy for our Fire Investigation Team—our Ignitable Liquid Detection K9 program! 🔥🐾

Since founding this program back in 1989, our county has remained one of the very few teams in all of New York State to utilize these specialized accelerant-detecting heroes.

While we only ever have one active K9 at a time, their impact over nearly four decades has been massive. Buddy, Bear, Ryker, Kyrie, and Cedar have dedicated their lives to solving arson cases, uncovering hidden evidence, and keeping our community safe.

From our trailblazers of the past to Cedar on the front lines today, we are incredibly proud of this program's rich history, our dedicated handlers, and our four-legged heroes.Swipe through to see three of the incredible K9s who have protected our county: Bear, Kyre, and Cedar! ⬇️❤️
