Oswego AmeriCorps Serving Oswego County youth through nutrition education, fitness programs, and community volunteer engagement. What is AmeriCorps? What Would a Member Do?

History of the Corporation for National Service

Created in 1993, the Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that engages Americans of all ages in service initiatives - AmeriCorps, which includes more than 21,600 sites, AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps NCCC; the National Senior Service Corps, which includes Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; and Social Innovation Fund, which looks for innovative and effective evidence-based solutions to local and national challenges in three priority areas: economic opportunity, healthy futures, and youth development. AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides Americans of all ages and backgrounds with a stipend and education scholarship in exchange for a term of service. More than 80,000 Americans each year are engaged in intensive service through AmeriCorps to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation. AmeriCorps members serve through non profit groups, public agencies and faith based organizations to meet critical needs in education, the environment, disaster relief and other human needs. Over 1 million individuals have served as AmeriCorps members since the program began in 1993. What Benefits do Members Receive? Our year round program consists of 900 hour member positions. They serve for six to twelve months, receive a total stipend of $6,627 and an education scholarship of $2,907. Summer members serve 300 hours, receive a total stipend of $2,208 and an education scholarship of $1,230. We also have several 300 hour scholarship positions. Those members receive an education scholarship of $1,230. You will be representing America at its best, making a lasting difference while promoting the values of community, responsibility and opportunity. You can learn valuable skills while fulfilling the AmeriCorps pledge to "get things done." Each program utilizes their AmeriCorps member in a unique way. At schools, members can assist students to improve their reading or math skills. At recreation programs, members can plan activities and supervise youth. With volunteer programs, members can recruit and oversee community volunteers. Where Would I Serve? The sites for the Oswego AmeriCorps service program vary from year to year. They can be schools, libraries, recreation programs, museums and non-profit agencies.

Hereโ€™s a look back at a few of our members from the late 90s and early 2000s!

Eric and Zander hosted a special shot contest during one of their siteโ€™s recent basketball tournaments. Participants could donate a canned good in exchange for two shots, with a small prize for anyone who made a basket!

Thanks to their efforts, they collected more than 100 food items to benefit the Catholic Charities of Oswego County food bank!

Great job, Eric and Zander!

Meet the Members Monday! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Meet Sam and Eric, two Oswego AmeriCorps members who, by the time this is posted, will have already successfully completed their 300-hour summer terms!

Over the past two months, Sam and Eric have worked incredibly hard at their host sites, not only completing their hours on time and staying on top of their AmeriCorps responsibilities, but also making sure the kids at their sites had a fun, safe, adventure-filled summer! In just a short amount of time, they made a meaningful impact on the kids and communities they served and helped make this summer a memorable one for the children at their sites.

Thank you, Sam and Eric, for your dedication to AmeriCorps and your community this summer!

And the best part? All of these numbers come from June 1 through August 21, less than three months of service! ๐Ÿ‘

Thank you to our dedicated members and community partners for making Summer 2026 a success!

Last week, AmeriCorps member Connor completed his community involvement project at Bishopโ€™s Commons in Oswego, bringing residents and community members together for an afternoon of fun and connection! ๐Ÿ’™

With the help of seven friends Connor recruited to volunteer, the group spent their Saturday afternoon with residents playing trivia, cards, and other games.

Great job, Connor!

Last week, AmeriCorps member Zander spoke at the Fulton Common Council meeting to share his experience as an AmeriCorps member this summer with Fulton Community Basketball, Inc.

We are very fortunate to have Zander on our team! He has been a great asset to his site and the many children they serve every day.

Way to go, Zander! ๐ŸŒŸ

Meet the Members Monday! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This week, we're excited to introduce Connor and Madison, two AmeriCorps members who have gone above and beyond in serving their community this summer.

Although Connor and Madison began their service later than the rest of our summer members, they embraced the challenge, knowing they would have to work extra hard to catch up on their hours. Over the past month, they have demonstrated incredible dedication and commitment, spending long days teaching children throughout Oswego County about the importance of fitness and nutrition, all while making summer fun and memorable for the kids they serve.

Thank you, Connor and Madison, for your hard work and the positive impact you're making in our community! ๐Ÿ’™
