🔥 We ALL love the cozy glow of a wood stove or fireplace. Nothing says New England fall quite like a warm fire, fuzzy socks, and pretending your heating bill isn't actively trying to ruin your life. 🍂🪵
BUT… there’s a fine line between *cozy evening by the fire* and *Otis Fire showing up to ruin your night.* 🚒
Since we'd prefer to meet you at the grocery store instead of standing in your living room at 2 a.m., let's talk CHIMNEY FIRES.
🧹 **Get your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year.** Creosote buildup is basically chimney glitter, except instead of being impossible to clean off your floor, it can catch fire and ruin EVERYTHING.
🪵 **Burn seasoned, dry firewood.** Your wood should be dry. If it's wetter than your basement after a nor'easter, it's not ready.
🚫 **Don't burn trash, cardboard, or treated wood.** Your wood stove is not a dumpster with a view.
🔥 **Keep combustibles away from your fireplace or wood stove.** That basket of kindling, pile of blankets, and decorative firewood arrangement might look adorable… right up until they become part of the problem.
🚨 **Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.** They're the roommates who actually contribute something useful to the household.
🧯 **Know the warning signs.** A loud roaring sound, dense smoke, or sparks shooting from your chimney can signal a chimney fire. Get everyone out, call 911, and don't try to investigate it yourself.
A little prevention goes a long way toward keeping your home warm, your family safe, and your firefighters out of your living room.
We love seeing you, Otis. But we'd prefer it be literally ANYWHERE other than your house while it's on fire.
