Franklin County Conservation District Conserving the natural resources of Franklin County Kansas since 1941! We provide technical & financial assistance to help people help the land.

Conservation districts had their beginning in the 1930’s when Congress, in response to national concerns over mounting erosion and dust storms, enacted the Soil Conservation Act of 1935. The official charter was signed on April 25, 1941 making us the 14th conservation district formed in the state of Kansas. The conservation district carries out the mission of "conserving natural resources for the future" by administering non-regulatory conservation programs which provide technical and financial assistance to local landowners who wish to establish conservation practices on their land. The conservation district connects landowners to both state and federal programs and assistance for conservation work while providing recommendations for best management practices designed to prevent soil erosion and protect water quality.

🍄 Mushrooms popping up in your lawn?

September is National Mushroom Month, and recent rain and warm temperatures have created ideal conditions for a flush of mushrooms.

The good news: mushrooms in an otherwise healthy lawn usually aren't a problem. They're often just the visible fruiting bodies of fungi breaking down organic matter beneath the soil.

What should you do? Usually, nothing! They will disappear naturally. If you don't like the way they look, simply mow or rake them away. Fungicides generally aren't necessary.

⚠️ As always, don't eat wild mushrooms unless they have been positively identified as safe.

When beef cattle producers administer injections, the choices they make can have a significant impact on effectiveness of the products being administered and carcass quality at the end of the production chain.

📰Read or 🎧listen to Episode 138 of the Canadian Beef Cattle Podcast, where we explore best practices for administering injects in beef cattle and how overlooking these can have broader consequences that affect the entire industry.

Kansas has fewer feral pigs now than it did 20-25 years ago and we're dedicated to keeping it that way! Our wildlife agent, Adaven, has been in touch with state officials in light of some recent sightings. While not shooting at them seems counterintuitive, Kansas is held up as THE model of successful feral swine control.
