Happy 1st Gotcha Day to our favorite member of the OPD family!!!

One year ago today, a tiny 1.3-pound kitten found herself in a BIG situation involving two BIG dogs, oncoming traffic, and one heroic employee with a bleeding heart for animals who wasn’t about to let anything happen to her!

What was supposed to be a temporary stay turned into 365 days of running the Overton Police Department!

Don’t let that sweet little face fool you! She’s cute, but she’s FEISTY and has enough attitude for the entire department!

Life around here wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining without her! Happy Gotcha Day, Sarge!

🚔 **Why does OPD conduct so much traffic enforcement on Commerce Street?**

The primary reason is simple: **to protect lives and property.**

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in the accident you’re about to witness. However, incidents like this serve as an important reminder of just how quickly things can go wrong on our roadways.

Traffic enforcement isn’t about writing tickets just to write tickets. It’s about preventing crashes, encouraging safe driving habits, and protecting everyone who uses our roads.

Please slow down, obey traffic laws, stay alert, and remember that the decisions you make behind the wheel affect more than just you.

The Overton Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers of the Van Zandt County Deputy who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving the citizens of Van Zandt County.

The City of Overton is addressing ongoing concerns involving stray animals throughout our community.

We need the cooperation of our residents to help bring this issue under control.

𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 § 𝟑.𝟎𝟐.𝟎𝟎𝟐 – 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬:

“It shall be a public nuisance to place or make convenient food or containers of food on any property or city street in the city for the purpose of feeding stray animals. TNR program cats may be fed in accordance with city TNR program policy by TNR caregivers.”

𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥?

Feeding stray animals doesn’t just affect the stray population. It can also put your own pets, family, property, and neighbors at risk.

Protects pets: Reduces fights, injuries, and disease exposure.
Controls overpopulation: Prevents food sources from attracting and sustaining stray populations.
Promotes public safety: Reduces unwanted animal activity and potential hazards.
Protects property: Helps prevent scattered trash and nuisance conditions.

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣

✅ Do not feed stray animals.

✅ Secure trash and remove accessible food sources.

✅ Avoid leaving pet food outdoors unattended.

𝗭𝗘𝗥𝗢 𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧

Overton Police will actively enforce Ordinance § 3.02.002. Violations will result in citations.

We understand that feeding stray animals often comes from a place of compassion. However, providing food is not a long-term solution to the problem.

Protecting our own pets starts with reducing the conditions that attract and keep stray animals in our community.

We need everyone working together to make Overton safer for residents and animals alike.

**Prepared to Serve When It Matters Most!**

In an effort to better serve the citizens of Overton, **every employee of the Overton Police Department is now certified in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, AED deployment and use, and life-saving techniques for responding to choking emergencies.**

Our officers are often among the first to arrive when someone is experiencing a medical emergency, and having the knowledge and skills to immediately provide life-saving care can make a tremendous difference.

Even Sarge got in on the action and had a great time! 🐾

A **BIG thank you to our partners at CHRISTUS EMS** for providing our department with this important training and helping us become even better prepared to serve and protect the citizens of Overton.
