The American Legion's Four Pillars
Still Serving: It’s Who We Are

In 1919, The American Legion was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens. Our organization’s positions and programs are guided by resolutions passed by American Legion National Convention delegates, and committee and commission members who represent nearly 2 million wartime veterans and their families. These programs, and the men and women who take the time to perform them, are what allow The American Legion to make a difference locally, and on the state and national levels. It’s who we are and what we do. Pillar I – Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation

First and foremost, we want to extend our appreciation to Honor Flight Central Florida Hub and the incredible team of volunteers who made Mission 37 such an amazing experience. What a wonderful tribute to veterans from all eras of military service! From the moment our journey began, it was clear how much thought, care, and appreciation went into making this day special for each of us. Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to visit some of our nation's most meaningful memorials, including the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Korean War Veterans Memorial, USMC Iwo Jima Memorial and United States Air Force Memorial. We also witnessed the solemn Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery and visited the Pentagon's 9/11 Memorial. Each stop was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served our country, especially those who never made it home. But what made this experience even more special was the camaraderie among the veterans. Sharing stories, reflecting on our service, and simply spending time together made this journey something we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

We are especially proud to have four of our fellow USAF veterans from Oviedo Memorial Post 243: Larry Kayne, Charlie Hedge, Carol Zumbro, and Robert Hankey. What an honor to make this journey together! To the Honor Flight team, our guardians, volunteers, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this possible, THANK YOU! You didn't just give us a trip to Washington, D.C. You gave us a day filled with friendship, reflection, pride, and memories that will last a lifetime. Mission 37 was truly a day to remember. God bless our veterans, God bless Honor Flight, and God bless America! 🇺🇸

During Coffee and Chat this week, we had the distinct pleasure and honor of presenting three of our members with their very own Quilts of Valor.

Please join us in congratulating Charlie Zuber, Scott Simms, and Kenny Rudock. Each of these gentlemen is so deserving of this special honor, and it was a privilege to recognize their service and sacrifice. ❤️🇺🇸

And, as we always do during Coffee and Chat, we also presented Grommets to several Friends of the Post in appreciation of their continued support of our veterans and our Post.
