Putting Resources to Work for Owosso Residents!

Since 2023, 54 homes in the City of Owosso have received assistance totaling $1,438,800 through housing improvement programs. These investments help residents make important repairs, improve energy efficiency, and address safety concerns in their homes.

The improvements have included:
🔨 Roof, window, and siding replacements
🏠 Repairs to porches and decks
♿ Installation of an accessible ramp and more accessible bathrooms
🔥 Replacement of furnaces with high-efficiency models and installation of new water heaters
⚡ Electrical service and panel upgrades
🛠️ Lead removal and home insulation
🚨 Installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
💧 Plumbing repairs to reduce water waste

Looking ahead, an estimated 87 additional homes are expected to receive assistance through 2028, representing approximately $3.75 million in additional funding. We are not currently accepting applications, but will share information as soon as space opens up.

These programs do more than repair homes. They help make homes safer, more accessible, and more energy-efficient while helping residents manage utility costs.

The City has applied for and administered grants through the State of MI Neighborhood Improvement Program, the MI-HOPE Program, and Community Development Block Grant funds to make these home improvements possible. These grants are managed through MSHDA; we would like to thank them for their assistance with navigating these programs.

We’re proud to support improvements that strengthen our homes, neighborhoods, and community!

The Parks and Recreation Commission has been busy this year with park projects! The basketball courts at Bentley Park received a much-needed facelift. There is a new splash pad at Bentley Park, new park signs on the river trail, new bleachers at the baseball fields, new scoreboards at the softball fields, and a new swing bench on the river trail. We can't wait to see what is next!

🚒🔥 Fire Safety Month at Emerson Elementary! 🔥🚒

Today, the Owosso Fire Department had the opportunity to visit Emerson Elementary as part of October Fire Safety Month!

Our firefighters spent time with Kindergarten and 1st grade students, introducing them to our fire staff and teaching them important fire safety lessons. The students had a great time learning about what firefighters do and how they can stay safe in the event of a fire. 🧯👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

A big thank you to Emerson Elementary for having us today, and to all of the schools and teachers who have made fire safety education a priority this month!

Important announcement: 📣

Who’s running for Owosso City Council, and what do they hope to accomplish? The Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce and The Argus-Press invite you to the Owosso City Council Candidate Forum on Friday, October 16, at the Owosso Performing Arts Center to hear from the candidates and get to know them before you vote! Then stay afterward to meet them individually and continue the conversation.

We believe helping people access information and connect with potential civic leaders is part of our responsibility to the community. Our Chamber’s work centers on four principles: Advocate, Connect, Educate, and Support. This forum puts those principles into practice by giving residents more information to make their own decisions.

Participating candidates will receive the same questions and equal time to respond, with no rebuttals. We’re providing a welcoming, neutral setting for everyone to learn more before casting a ballot.
