🚫πŸ”₯Lafayette County remains under a burn ban, and today fire danger is even higher. The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Fire Danger Statement for our area today, Monday, Oct. 19, from 12 PM to 7 PM. Low humidity and dry grass and leaves mean a grass fire could start easily and spread quickly this afternoon.

Please help us keep our community safe:

βœ… Keep vehicles and ATVs off dry grass. Hot exhaust systems can spark a fire.
βœ… Put ci******es out completely and never toss them out a window
βœ… Be careful with anything that throws sparks, like mowers, chainsaws, and welding or metal-cutting tools

If you see smoke or fire, call 911 right away.

πŸ”₯ ELEVATED FIRE DANGER TODAY: Lafayette County πŸ”₯

A strong cold front is moving through this morning. It is bringing gusty winds and drier air, and our grass, leaves and brush are already very dry. That combination means a fire can start easily and spread fast today.

⏰ When: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today
πŸ’¨ Wind: North-northwest at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph
πŸ’§ Humidity: Dropping to 30 to 40% this afternoon
🌡 Rain: None expected for at least the next seven days

🚫 Reminder: Lafayette County is under a burn ban. No outdoor burning of any kind. That includes brush piles, leaf piles, trash and campfires.

How you can help today:
βœ… Put ci******es out completely and dispose of them properly. Never toss them from a vehicle.
βœ… Don’t park or idle vehicles, ATVs or mowers on dry grass. Hot exhaust parts can ignite it.
βœ… Check that trailer safety chains aren’t dragging. They can throw sparks along the roadside.
βœ… Hold off on bush hogging or mowing in dry fields if you can. Blades hitting rocks can spark.
βœ… Keep a water hose ready near your home.

πŸ“ž See smoke or fire? Call 911 right away. The sooner our firefighters know, the sooner we can stop it.

Winds will ease after sunset, and the weekend looks cool and dry. Thank you for helping us keep Lafayette County safe. πŸš’

πŸŒ€ What's left of Isaias is moving through Lafayette County today. Here's what to expect:

πŸ’¨ WIND ADVISORY until 8 p.m. tonight
We're expecting gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Bring in or tie down loose items like patio furniture and trash cans. Tree limbs and power lines could come down. If you see a downed line, stay away from it and report it to your power company.

β˜€οΈ The rain and wind should ease this evening. Sunday looks sunny with a high near 84. If you're out Sunday, watch for limbs and debris on the roads.

Make sure Wireless Emergency Alerts are turned on in your phone's settings.

🌧️ WEATHER UPDATE: Isaias brings heavy rain and gusty winds to Lafayette County Saturday

Isaias is expected to reach north Mississippi as a tropical storm. Rain moves in late tonight, and Saturday will be the roughest day.

⚠️ A FLOOD WATCH is in effect for all of Lafayette County from 1 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

What to expect: 🌧️ Rain: 1.5 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts possible πŸ’¨ Wind: steady 15 to 25 mph Saturday with gusts up to 45 mph 🌊 Flash flooding: low-lying areas, roads and small creeks are most at risk

πŸŒ€ Hurricane Isaias: Wet and windy Saturday for Lafayette County

Hurricane Isaias is expected to come ashore on the Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. By the time it reaches north Mississippi on Saturday, it will be a much weaker storm. It will not be a hurricane here. We'll still feel it:

🌧️ Rain: 2 to 3 inches Saturday, with locally higher amounts. The heaviest rain is expected Saturday morning.
πŸ’¨ Wind: Gusts up to 35 mph. That's enough to bring down limbs, and a few power outages are possible.
πŸ• Timing: About sunrise to midnight Saturday. A few showers could start after 1 a.m. Saturday morning.
β˜€οΈ Sunday: An early shower, then sunny and 77Β°.

We've been in a drought, and the rain is welcome. But dry, hard ground can't soak up a downpour quickly. Watch for water over roads, in ditches and in low spots, especially Saturday morning.

βœ… Use Friday to get ready:

Clear leaves and debris from storm drains, gutters and ditches
Bring in or tie down patio furniture, trash cans and decorations
Charge your phones and keep a flashlight handy

πŸš— If you see water over the road, turn around, don't drown. It only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep a car away.

As of Thursday morning, there are no watches or warnings for Lafayette County. We're in contact with the National Weather Service in Memphis and will post updates if that changes.

Heading to Nashville for the Ole Miss game? Expect rain and gusty wind along the way Saturday.

πŸ”₯ BURN BAN IN EFFECT FOR LAFAYETTE COUNTY πŸ”₯

Lafayette County is back under a burn ban for the next 30 days. 🚫

Dry conditions make it easy for outdoor fires to spread quickly and get out of control. πŸŒΎπŸ’¨ Until the ban is lifted, please do not burn:

🚫 Brush piles and yard debris
🚫 Trash or household waste
🚫 Fields, pastures, or ditch lines
🚫 Campfires, bonfires, or burn barrels
🚫 Any other open-flame outdoor burning

Please also be careful with anything that could spark a fire, like discarded ci******es, hot equipment in dry grass, and vehicles parked over tall, dry vegetation. πŸš—πŸŒΏ

Our firefighters work hard to protect our neighbors, homes, and land. ❀️ You can help us by following the ban and keeping an eye out for anything unusual. πŸ‘€

🚨 If you see smoke or fire, call 911 right away. Please don't wait.
