What are some of the biggest traffic safety challenges facing Oxnard, and what can we do to make our streets safer?

In this episode of the Oxnard Police Department Podcast, Community Affairs Manager Paul Carganilla sits down with Corporals Alexis Arellano and Oscar Toraya to discuss an issue that affects everyone who lives, works, or travels through our community: traffic safety.

Together, they explore some of the most common dangerous driving behaviors officers encounter, including speeding, distracted driving, running red lights, and driving under the influence. They also discuss the importance of pedestrian and bicyclist safety, the Department's efforts to address dangerous driving, and how community members can help identify traffic concerns in their neighborhoods.

Traffic safety isn't just about enforcing the law. It's about education, awareness, personal responsibility, and working together to protect our community.

Together, we can make Oxnard's streets safer for everyone.

NEWS RELEASE

SUBJECT: National Teen Driver Safety Week

National Teen Safety Week is October 18-24
Teen driver safety depends on parent and guardian action

Oxnard, Calif. – Safe driving starts long before anyone gets behind the wheel. This National Teen Driver Safety Week, the Oxnard Police Department encourages parents and guardians to discuss safe driving habits with their teens before handing over the keys.
Car crashes are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, in 2024, there were 2,320 people killed in crashes involving a teen driver. That same year, 496 people were killed in crashes on California roads involving drivers aged 20 or younger.

Teens should understand the dangers of risky driving behaviors, like speeding, texting while driving, not wearing a seat belt and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Teens are also encouraged to use free, mobile-friendly resources from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), including the free, mobile-friendly California Quick Reference Driver’s Handbook, educational videos and Teen Driver Roadmap, a step-by-step video guide for teens and their parents to help them prepare to get behind the wheel safely.

The Office of Traffic Safety offers the following tips to support teen drivers:
• Learn about California’s provisional licensing law and Graduated Driver Licensing Laws, which places restrictions on passengers and nighttime driving during the first year a teen has a license.
• Lead by example: Every time you’re behind the wheel, it is a chance to model safe driving habits and talk about it with your teen.
• Establish safe driving behaviors that are not only expected, but also the law. This includes no phone use while driving, eliminating distractions from friends, always following the posted speed limit and always buckling up.
• Friends, family members, parents and guardians can create a teen driving contract to outline specific driving guidelines.
• Speak up for safety: Encourage your teen to say something as a passenger if the driver is speeding, distracted, not wearing their seat belt or otherwise driving unsafely.

Teens, parents, educators, mentors and California drivers can also practice safe driving behaviors in realistic situations on the new, free, web-based driving simulation, The Road Ahead, at TheRoadAhead.GoSafelyCA.org. Additionally, there is a user guide that provides an overview for how to get started and how to facilitate discussions about the game experience. The user guide is available online.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

THANK YOU, OXNARD!

What an incredible afternoon of ice cream, football, and community fun! Our 'Cones with SWAT' event was a blast, and we want to thank everyone who came out to spend some time with us!

Our SWAT Team had a great time meeting so many new friends, treating hundreds of kids to complimentary Mr. Softee ice cream cones, playing flag football, and giving tours of our two armored rescue vehicles (BearCats). We even made a new feathered friend when a neighborhood rooster stopped by to join the fun!

Events like these are about more than ice cream and cool vehicles. They're an opportunity for our officers to connect with the people we serve, and get to know one another outside of our everyday police work.

To everyone who stopped by, said hello, shared a laugh, or joined us for a little fun — thank you! We genuinely appreciate you taking time out of your day to spend it with us.

And a special thank you to the members of our SWAT Team for making this event possible!

We're grateful to be part of this community, and we look forward to seeing you at the next event!

TRAFFIC SAFETY REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY! 🚔

The Oxnard Police Department continues its efforts to reduce traffic collisions and traffic fatalities throughout our city.

🚓 This week, we will have additional officers on patrol, focusing on traffic enforcement, dangerous driving behaviors, and identifying and arresting drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Our goal is simple: Prevent collisions, save lives, and keep our roadways safe for everyone.

⚠️ We need our community's help!
✅ Obey traffic laws and posted speed limits.
✅ Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
✅ Avoid distractions while driving.
✅ Watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable roadway users.
✅ Talk to your family and friends about the importance of driving responsibly.

Every traffic fatality is one too many. While enforcement is an important part of our efforts, education and community involvement are just as critical.

We ask everyone to help us spread this message. Together, we can make a difference and prevent another family from experiencing the tragedy of losing a loved one in a traffic collision.

Drive responsibly. Make good decisions. Help us save lives.
