Due to predicted thunderstorms tomorrow, the monthly Tornado Siren test is cancelled. If you hear the sirens tomorrow, it is for a real weather threat, not a test.

Today, several of our Area 1 Emergency Management Directors came together in Paducah for a tabletop exercise centered around a missing child at a large community event.

The scenario challenged us to think through search operations, unified command, communications, available resources, and the added concern of a missing child near the riverfront. Exercises like this give us an opportunity to talk through the “what ifs” before we’re faced with the real thing.

Afterward, we took advantage of being downtown and enjoyed some BBQ on the River together. Because apparently you can’t conduct an emergency management exercise about a large festival and not conduct a little field research afterward.

Always a good day when we can train together, learn from one another, and enjoy a little fellowship along the way.

McCracken Rescue has special ties to both the plane and Mermet Springs. When the movie US Marshalls was filmed, Squad members played as extras on the scene, provided safety boats and other supporting safety roles on set.

Mermet Springs is where we send all of our divers for their certification and where they do all of of their dive training. It’s always neat for our divers to be able to see the plane and know it’s a small part of McCracken County Rescue Squad history.

The McCracken County Rescue Squad operates as a volunteer response team under the leadership of McCracken County Emergency Management. The Squad provides trained personnel and specialized resources to serve our community.

Each week, the Squad will be sharing a Sunday Recap highlighting what our volunteers have been up to from emergency responses, training and community events.

We’re incredibly appreciative of our Rescue Squad members and the countless hours they give to serve McCracken County and the surrounding area.

Today, McCracken County Emergency Management, along with other Elected Officials and County/City Employees, were honored to attend the unveiling of Steve Doolittle Drive at the entrance of the new McCracken County Sports Park.

The Sports Park was incredibly important to Steve. It was one of his final major projects, and he put countless hours into helping turn the vision for this facility into a reality. It is fitting that generations of families entering the park will now travel a road bearing his name.

Anyone who knew Steve knew that public service was never about recognition or credit for him. He simply saw something that needed to be done and went to work. Much of what he accomplished happened quietly and behind the scenes, always with the goal of making McCracken County a better place.

Emergency Management was fortunate to experience that dedication firsthand. Steve was a tremendous supporter of our office, our mission, and our volunteers.

Steve is deeply missed by those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him. But today was a wonderful reminder that while he may no longer be with us, his service, his influence, and the difference he made in McCracken County remain.

Steve Doolittle Drive is a fitting tribute to a true public servant and a lasting reminder of a life spent serving others.
