Painted Post Fire Department Village of Painted Post Fire Department The Painted Post Fire Service began in 1870 with the Ardell Hose Company and the Bronson Hook and Ladder Company.

The Painted Post Fire Department was organized on April 21, 1886. The first recorded Fire Chief was H.B. Hodgman. The fire department was located in the present Erwin Town Hall building. In the 1940β€²s the protection area that the Painted Post Fire Department was responsible for was the Village of Painted Post, Gang Mills, Presho, Monterey, Lindley, Coopers Plains, Hornby, Riverside and down to the Pennsylvania border and up to Addison and Campbell. The first motorized piece of equipment was purchased in 1918. A Ladder/Hose truck was purchased in 1920 and the first fire engine was purchased in 1936, a Ward LaFrance 500 gpm pumper. The Fire Department moved into the new Village Hall in 1952. A Rescue Squad was formed in 1953. In 1969, Painted Post purchased and received two American LaFrance Series 900 1000 gpm diesel powered custom built fire engines. These two engines were the first diesel powered pieces of fire apparatus in Steuben County. Today the Painted Post Fire Department provides fire protection to the Villages of Painted Post and Riverside and mutual aid to surrounding fire departments. The fire department is a Municipal Volunteer Fire Department with an Insurance Services Organization (ISO) fire suppression rating of Class 4. The fire department is very proud of this rating because it is usually only earned by full time professional city fire departments. Chief: Joseph Button
1st Assistant Chief: Larry Smith
2nd Assistant Chief: Brian McCarthy

It is with great sadness that the Painted Post Fire Department remembers Alvin S (Al) Hemly, retired Assistant Chief and a dedicated member of our department for 50 years.

Al joined the Painted Post Fire Department in November 1965 and spent five decades serving our department and community in numerous roles.

Al’s Service to Painted Post Fire Dept include:
- 1980–1984: Vice President and President
- 1984–1989: Lieutenant and Captain of the Engine Company
- 1989–1996: 2nd Assistant Chief
- 1996–2001: 1st Assistant Chief
- 2001–2015: Station Manager and Radio Operator

Many will remember Al answering incoming calls at the station with his familiar greeting, β€œFire Station, Hemly!”

Throughout his years of service, Al was an integral part of department operations, apparatus committeesβ€”including work on our current Engine 30 and former Engine 29β€”and various department and village committees. He also played an important role in the department’s social activities and community events. His sons, Fred and Brian, followed in his footsteps and also joined the department.

Al’s dedication and contributions helped shape the Painted Post Fire Department over generations. We are grateful for his decades of service and the lasting impact he made on our department and community.

A celebration of Alvin’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions may be made to the Painted Post Fire Department.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Al’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Al. Thank you for 50 years of service. We’ve got it from here.

On September 11th, the Painted Post Fire Department had the honor of paying tribute to Wallace (Wally) John Marribitt, retired Corning City Fire Department Lieutenant, longtime Village of Painted Post resident, and tremendous supporter of the fire service.

It was an honor to fly the flag during his funeral procession through the village, and a unique opportunity to have both generations of Truck 3 together. The procession was led by the East Campbell Volunteer Fire Department and included the Corning Firefighters IAFF Local 932 for a graveside Final Alarm ceremony.

Wally was loved and will be deeply missed by so many, both within and beyond the fire service.

RIP, Wally.
We’ve got it from here. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸš’

We recently hosted an Aerial Operations course at the Painted Post Fire Department, bringing together firefighters from PPFD and several surrounding departments.

Our Truck 3 and Montour Falls Truck 5 were put to work throughout the course, giving firefighters the opportunity to operate multiple aerial apparatus and practice aerial operations, inspection, positioning, setup, stabilization, and more.

A big thank you to the CPP Schools for the use of the Board of Education building, Montour Falls Fire Department for bringing Truck 5, and all of the instructors and students! πŸš’

Another course offering will be starting soon at The Bath Volunteer Fire Department! Firefighters interested in attending can sign up, and your department does not need to have an aerial apparatus to send students.
