Putnam County Young Democrats Fl

Last night, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani helped flip three congressional seats in a single primary, and the Democratic establishment is losing its stranglehold on the party.

Brad Lander crushed Daniel Goldman, a Levi Strauss heir and AIPAC-aligned incumbent, by 30 points in Brooklyn. Claire Valdez knocked out Antonio Reynoso, the establishment-backed Brooklyn Borough President, in an open seat race. And Darializa Avila Chevalier, a PhD student and democratic socialist activist, ousted Adriano Espaillat, the sitting chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx.

What makes these wins meaningful is not just who won. It is how they won and what they ran on. No corporate PAC money. No wealthy donors pulling strings behind the scenes. Platforms built around working people: housing, healthcare, and a foreign policy that refuses to write blank checks for atrocities. All three candidates were willing to call the Gaza genocide what it is, name the displacement of millions in Lebanon, and condemn the illegal occupation of the West Bank, while drawing the distinction that has always been true: being Jewish and supporting the political project of Zionism are not the same thing.

Here in Putnam County, we should be paying close attention. We have some of the worst poverty rates in the state, and politicians like Randy Fine have made careers out of culture war theatrics while delivering nothing for working people. What happened in New York last night is proof that a different politics is possible. And heading into the Florida CD-6 Democratic primary, we have a field of strong candidates ready to build something real.

The donor class does not own every primary. Not anymore.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there being an example of what it takes to be a good a man.!

So, what does it take to be a good man?

To me, being a good man has nothing to do with how hard you can hit, who you can dominate, or how much wealth and power you've accumulated.

Instead, being a good man means showing up, not just for your family, or for the people who love you, but for your neighborhood, your community, and for the stranger who needs a helping hand.

A good man understands that we owe a debt to society and does everything he can to ensure that debt gets paid back in full.

A good man is humble and asks for help when he needs it (including for directions)

A good man cries, and he doesn't look around the room to see who’s noticed.

A good man treats others with respect, not because it benefits him, but because it's the right thing to do.

A good man doesn't pretend to be something he's not, and he doesn’t put on a mask to face the world.

A good man is proud to be empathetic and works to understand his own emotions.

A good man knows real strength comes from the willingness to be vulnerable enough to recognize your shortcoming, determined enough to learn from your mistakes, and humble enough to be teachable.

But most of all, a good man is fearless in his love, and he gives it unconditionally and without expectation.

Happy Juneteenth from the Putnam County Young Democrats.

Today we celebrate the people who sacrificed everything to stand against the evil of slavery, and in doing so pushed America closer to fulfilling its promise of freedom and equality for all.
Their courage, resilience, and determination changed America forever.

But the work is far from done.

For over 350 years, race has been used as a weapon to divide working people and prevent us from standing together against those who have always depended on the exploitation of others to maintain their power.

The planter class that built its wealth on enslaved labor is no more. But the oligarchy that replaced them has been consolidating wealth and influence through lies, corruption, and propaganda ever since.

We see it in the attacks on voter rights, the massive wealth gap, the criminal justice system, and in the hate groups whose membership has risen in recent years.

But we also see hope in the men and women across the country who refuse to give up and continue to push for an America that is truly the land of the free.

Today we honor the struggle. Tomorrow we keep working.

This is what community looks like

If it were up to Nikki Hawthorne, no Putnam County child would go hungry this summer. And that’s what she hopes to accomplish as the Putnam County School District’s Summer Feeding Program plans to hand out at least 189,000 meals if last year’s numbers are an indicator.
