Meet the “doves” 🕊️ These gorgeous birds are actually white homing pigeons, bred and trained for exactly this kind of work. Unlike true doves, homing pigeons have an incredible built-in GPS that lets them find their way back home from miles away. That’s what makes release ceremonies possible in the first place: they’re not lost after they fly off, they’re heading home.

A few things that separate a reputable release company from one to avoid:

- Training over time, not forced flights. Reputable trainers build up a bird’s homing distance gradually over weeks or months, starting close to home and extending out. Birds should never be released somewhere they haven’t been trained to return from.

- Retrieval rate matters. Good handlers track and can tell you their return rate, and they release in weather the birds can safely fly in (no releases in storms, extreme heat, or when hawks are actively hunting nearby).

- They keep the same birds for years. These pigeons aren’t disposable. A well-run loft has birds who’ve done hundreds of releases and are basically retired family members at this point.

Most days they just get to be pigeons: sunning, waddling, doing pigeon things, until it’s time to suit up for a role they’re genuinely built for. 🕊️✨

September 11 will always be a day we remember. 🇺🇸

Years ago, our doves had the honor of being part of a 9/11 Memorial ceremony, alongside those who gathered to remember the lives lost and honor the heroes who gave so much that day.

There are moments that stay with you, and being part of this memorial is one we’ll never forget.

Today, we remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the courage and sacrifice that brought so many together.

Never forgotten. 🇺🇸🤍
