We welcomed Walter Hays Elementary School to Gamble for a day of learning through our Roots & Shoots program.

The students learned about flower dissection, pollinator diversity, and how to build their very own bee! šŸ
They even had the chance to fly their insects around the garden to help pollinate the flora. 🌼 Lizzy Bee was there to supervise of course!

Roots & Shoots is a garden-based science field trip program for second and third grade elementary school students. Students learn about nature, ecology, the environment, and community through hands-on exploration in the garden. 🌱

The Roots & Shoots curriculum is tied to the California state science standards and utilizes every aspect of Gamble Garden’s exceptional garden as its learning laboratory. 🧠

Students work in small groups with our talented volunteers to learn about the world around them and experience the wonder of nature. 🌿

Our very own garden director participated in our Roots & Shoots program as a kid which inspired him to pursuit a career in Ecology and eventually lead the horticulture team at Gamble!

The Roots & Shoots program nurtures the next generation, as a visit to Gamble could be the catalyst that inspires our future leaders, visionaries, and change-makers. There’s a lot that can be learned from a garden 🪓

Meet Gamble’s Garden Director, Corey!

He was first introduced to Gamble Garden as a third-grader having been a participant in our Roots and Shoots program as a kid.

He previously served as a farm manager and as a graduate research assistant with the USDA. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in General Biology and Zoology and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Ecology, researching crop pollination, pollinator safe gardening practices, plant identification, and other botanical research.

(Ask him about the stingless bee šŸ population of Palo Alto!)

This Saturday, May 16th, Corey will be teaching a horticulture class covering garden irrigation. You’ll learn key terminology, explore the essential components of irrigation systems, and discover the basics of designing efficient drip irrigation. Corey will demonstrate how to identify and fix leaks, troubleshoot common problems, and keep systems running smoothly.

This class offers the chance to see Gamble’s irrigation systems in action!

If you are looking for the knowledge and confidence to make practical improvements in your own garden, saving both water and effort, head to our Classes & Events page on our website to register!
