A Letter to My Palo Pinto County Democratic Family
Dear Friends,
As many of you know, this month marks the end of a chapter that has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.
After nearly ten years serving as Chair of the Palo Pinto County Democratic Party, I have made the decision to step aside and begin a new chapter. As I do, I find myself reflecting less on titles and positions and more on people, friendships, shared experiences, and the incredible journey we have traveled together.
When I first became County Chair, our organization looked very different than it does today. We were smaller, had fewer resources, fewer volunteers, and fewer opportunities to connect with Democrats across our region. Together, we changed that.
Over the years, we organized events, attended conventions, knocked doors, made phone calls, recruited candidates, registered voters, built relationships, and showed up for one another. We celebrated victories and endured disappointments. We worked through challenges that at times felt overwhelming. Through it all, we continued moving forward because we believed our community deserved a voice and because we believed democracy matters.
What I am most proud of is not any single event, campaign, fundraiser, or election. What I am most proud of is the community we built together.
Many of you started as volunteers and became dear friends. We shared meals, meetings, road trips, conventions, rallies, candidate forums, and countless conversations. We laughed together, worried together, celebrated together, and sometimes simply showed up for each other when life became difficult. Those relationships will remain one of the greatest gifts this experience has given me.
During these years, I have grown tremendously as a person, an organizer, and a leader. The lessons I learned through our work together have shaped who I am today. They have prepared me for the next chapter of my life and the next phase of my work.
Many of you also walked beside me through one of the most difficult periods of my life: the loss of Jesse. Your kindness, support, messages, prayers, phone calls, and friendship meant more than I could ever adequately express. Grief changes a person, but so does love. The support I received from this community reminded me that even in our hardest moments, we do not walk alone.
While I am stepping away from county leadership, I am not stepping away from the work.
My focus moving forward will continue through The 134 PAC, an organization created to strengthen rural Democratic organizing across Texas. The relationships, skills, and experiences that began right here in Palo Pinto County helped make that work possible. Everything we have accomplished locally has reinforced my belief that rural communities matter, rural voices matter, and rural Democrats matter.
I believe the future is bright for Palo Pinto County Democrats.
I am pleased to share that Jeff Brown has assumed the role of County Chair. We are leaving the party in a position of financial stability, with established relationships throughout our congressional district and strong connections with Democratic leaders and county chairs across the region.
Most importantly, we are leaving behind a strong foundation that has been built through years of dedication, hard work, and commitment from so many people.
I have complete confidence in Jeff's leadership and in the future of our county party. I truly believe we are positioned for success, and I wholeheartedly believe we will continue building momentum and electing Democrats in the coming election cycles.
As I close this chapter, please know how grateful I am for each of you.
Thank you for your trust.
Thank you for your friendship.
Thank you for your encouragement.
While my role may be changing, the friendships we have built will not. I will continue cheering you on, supporting our shared values, and celebrating your successes from a different seat.
The last ten years have been filled with memories I will carry for the rest of my life. I leave this role with a full heart, deep gratitude, and tremendous hope for what comes next.
I wish each of you happiness, success, friendship, purpose, and good fortune in the years ahead.
With gratitude,
Carla Schoonover-Porter
