We welcomed a full house of around 150 people, and our family, friends, and community were overjoyed to see all the hard work the youth put into the program during the Spring term
We were elated to end the program with a special Dakba workshop led by our talented instructor and friend, Muhammad Darawshe!
Thank you all who joined us, and we will catch you at the next one!

Today, Representative Abdelnasser Rashid, , presented Resolution HR0892 to the 104th General Assembly in Springfield. Presented on May 26th, adopted on May 13th, this resolution was passed as a Memorial for Murod Kurdi, May He Rest in Peace, to honor and mourn the death of Murod.
Murod Kurdi was deeply loved by his mother Fadia, his brother Suphi, his entire family, friends, and community. On June 5th, 2023, Murod was struck and killed by Leanne Cusack, a white woman who admitted to drinking before getting behind the wheel and was let go with nothing but a traffic violation. Oak Lawn Police Department admitted they had smelled alcohol on Leanne Cusack’s breath, and that she refused to take a breathalyzer or field sobriety test. Officers could have contacted the state’s attorney’s office to request a forced blood draw, but they decided not to detain her and instead sent her away with nothing but a Traffic violation for “failure to reduce speed.”
Oak Lawn Police Department allowed Leanne to leave the scene of the car crash in which Murod was ultimately killed. Not only has the oak lawn police department failed Murod by not following proper procedure and allowing his killer, Leanne Cusack, to leave the scene but also continuously participated in stonewalling and silencing Murod’s family. At every police and commission board meeting, Fadia, Murod’s mother, is not allowed to give her full testimony. Month after month, we attend the Fire and Police Commission meetings with our demands for accountability and justice; we will not rest nor stop until we see justice!
Shame on Oak Lawn Police Department and shame on the Fire and Police Commission Board for their racism, harm, and repeated violence against our communities. OLPD let a KILLER go, and their refusal to hold their police officers accountable for their actions shows us that they do not value the integrity of the law and the safety of the communities they supposedly “protect”.
We will continue to fight for justice for Murod, for his family, and for all who have faced institutional and state violence. Join us on June 3rd at 5 PM at the Oak Lawn Police Department - 9446 Raymond Ave., Oak Lawn, IL!
