Sea salt is harvested from evaporated sea water. It is a very clean tasting salt and can contain dozens of healthy trace minerals. In his 1791 book, Travels, William Bartram documented Muscogee (Creek) women making salt for domestic use. Then, during the American Civil War, salt making along the Florida coast was a critical contribution to the Confederate war effort. When the Union naval blockade strangled foreign imports and early territorial losses stripped the Confederacy of alternative inland salt reserves, the Southern war machine grew heavily dependent on Florida's coastal operations. Today you can buy Florida gulf salt at the grocery store!

White-Topped Pitcher Plants - Artist Philip Juras here imagines the experience William Bartram described in the 1770s in his visit to the Gulf Coast. Pitcher plants thrive in the wet pine savannas, bogs, and flatwoods of the Florida Panhandle. In Florida, fall marks the peak growth period for the white-topped pitcher plant, which produces its largest, most vibrant autumn traps during this season. These striking pitchers often time their peak with the autumn moonlight, using the bright reflection to attract night-flying insects.

Here in the Florida Panhandle, we get a gorgeous display of native wildflowers from late summer into November. Go for a drive along a country road and enjoy these wildflowers blooming now. Goldenrod, Swamp Sunflower, Blazing Star, Aster, and Florida Paintbrush thrive everywhere from coastal dunes to pine flatwoods. They provide essential nectar for fall pollinators.

Unlike most cone-bearing trees (such as pines and spruces) which are evergreen, the bald cypress turns a brilliant copper before dropping its foliage in the fall. As Bald Cypress trees age the upper branches cease stretching upward and the very top begins to "die back" or flatten out due to age and wind action, creating the signature flat-topped silhouette. Virtually 99% or more of original virgin bald cypress old-growth forests across the American Southeast were harvested during the heavy industrial logging era from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries.

The scuppernong grapes are now ripe and in the market! Named after the Scuppernong River which empties into the Albemarle Sound on the coast of North Carolina, these wild grapes were cultivated by English settlers as early as the 1600’s. The green-bronze grapes like full sun, high humidity, a sturdy trellis, and well-drained, acidic soil. We eat them by sucking out the pulp and discarding the thick skin and bitter seed. The name is Native American.

"Find the good in people" is the theme of this mural by our favorite mural artist, George F. Baker III (GFB3). George completed a new mural on Wylie Street today. Forward Warrior is an annual live mural festival and public art project in Atlanta that transforms a half-mile stretch of walls along Wylie Street in Cabbagetown into a massive open-air gallery.
