On July 31st, NETXATTF Detectives were contacted by the Lamar County Tax Assessors Office in regards to a citizen presenting a fraudulent title to put in their name. Detectives responded and found that a subject had purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray on Facebook Marketplace for a large sum of US Currency and was provided the fraudulent title for the vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the Corvette was found to have fraudulent VINs on it and the true VIN was reported stolen out of Austin, Texas. The vehicle was seized due to it being stolen.
Unfortunately, scams like this happen every day. Avoid online marketplaces to purchase vehicles if at all possible. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
