Fellow Booster: Thank you to everyone who helped out at Monday’s Mostaccioli Dinner fundraiser! Donations are still coming in, but at last count we raised nearly $2,700. We will have a chance to discuss how to use those funds during our December 5 membership meeting and year-end party, so stay tuned for details. Now, though, it’s time to focus on the midterm elections. Here are some ideas for what you can do to make November 3 a good day in our community, our state and our country:
• Work through that writer’s cramp and join us for one last push to help secure Democratic control of the Senate. Our partners at the Progressive Turnout Project asked if we write another 300 postcards to support Texas Senate candidate James Talarico in his race against Ken Paxton, someone a (Republican) judge called “the most corrupt politician Texas has ever seen.” We will gather at the same time (9:00-11:00 on Monday and Tuesday) at the same place (the JD Camp Memorial Table at the back of the Burger King in Paris), with a goal of getting all 300 in the mail by Wednesday. Call JD at (954) 802-2202 if you can join us.
• Help make the case for Jen Todd by joining fellow Booster Mason Tegeler in canvassing for her this Sunday afternoon. Contact Mason directly for more details at [email protected].
• Donate your bribe money to a good cause. If you are on Medicare, you may have received an extra $90 from the government; this is money the Trump administration illegally appropriated in a transparent effort to influence the election. If you can afford it, we urge you to use that money to support democracy by donating it to a Democratic candidate. Here are just a few ideas. If you want to keep your money close to home, send it to our own Jen Todd. If you want to support a rising star in neighboring Iowa, Josh Turek can use your help. If (in addition to winning control of the Senate) supporting a pro-union voice is important to you, no one has been a stronger voice for labor than Sherrod Brown, who is locked in a close Senate race against a corporate shill in Ohio.
• Do your homework and vote. You can vote early by going to the second floor of the Edgar County courthouse between 8:00-4:00 Monday to Friday. There are no ballot measures this year, so the ballot is pretty straightforward. The one question you may have is whether to support extending the terms of three judges (one for the Illinois Appellate Court and two for the Illinois 5th Circuit). While the ballot says they are “non-partisan” all three were initially elected as Republicans. Under Illinois law, judges only state their party affiliation the first time they run; after that, they remain in the job as long as 60% of voters support them staying on.
• Ask your Republican friends to name one thing Mary Miller has done for our district in the past two years. If they can’t, ask if they would accept that from any other employee and if we should reward that kind of performance by sending her back to Washington. If they won’t vote for Jen Todd, urge them to send a message by simply not voting.
• Mark your calendar to join your fellow Democrats at 6:30 on Tuesday, November 3 at Lot 50 for an election night watch party. As we watch the election returns come in, it will be a chance to see the work of Democrats across the country – including in Edgar County – translate into action in our community, our state and our country.
Wins of the week
• Republicans keep crossing party lines to help Democratic candidates. In the Maine Senate race, Susan Collins spent tens of thousands of dollars to run an ad in Portland, Oregon rather than Portland, Maine. In Texas, someone close to Ken Paxton leaked a video of him from July, partying in Dubai with his mistress and two fugitives from U.S. justice. You literally could not make this stuff up.
• We now know where the Trump administration draws a line on corruption. It is OK for the President, his sons and the men in his inner circle to engage in spectacularly brazen graft and self-dealing. (Wikipedia keeps a running list.) But the White House drew a line when a woman tried to get in on the fun, firing U.S. Ambassador to Greece (and, until recently, fiancée of Don Jr.) Kimberley Guilfoyle for asking a campaign donor for $100,000 in exchange for access to the President.
Thanks for helping us fight the good fight. Feel free to share these with family and friends and members of your social networks. Send your own ideas of actions that Boosters can take to [email protected].
