It is with deep sorrow that the Parsippany-Troy Hills Police Department announces the passing of Retired Chief of Police Michael Filippello, ID #243, who passed away peacefully last night at the age of 82.
Chief Filippello began his career with the department on April 3, 1972, as a patrol officer. He later served as a detective in the Investigative Division and rose through the ranks to Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Patrol Captain, and Deputy Chief. On February 11, 1988, he was appointed Chief of Police. He retired in June 2006 after 34 years of service to the Parsippany community.
A champion of modernization, Chief Filippello led the department through a period of significant advancement. Under his direction, in 1990, the Parsippany Police Department became the second municipal police department in New Jersey to achieve accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). He also created the department’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), and he was a passionate advocate for training. He focused on getting officers trained and believed in cross-training them across job functions, building a more capable and versatile department.

Our thoughts and prayers are with retired Chief Filippello’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His leadership and legacy will not be forgotten.

🚨 SPOOFED PHONE NUMBER SCAM ALERT 🚨

We've received reports of scammers spoofing caller ID to display our department's name and non-emergency number. In the most recent incident, the caller claimed to be with our department and to be assisting Homeland Security. These callers typically try to obtain personal information or demand money or gift cards to "avoid arrest."

The Parsippany-Troy Hills Police Department will NEVER call demanding payment, gift cards, or redemption codes.

If you get a call claiming to be from us:

🔴 Do not rely on caller ID. It can be faked.
🔴 Do not share personal or financial information.
🔴 Ask for the caller's name and badge number
🔴 Hang up and call our non-emergency line directly at 973-263-4300, ext. 0. Our dispatchers will help determine if the call was legitimate.

*Caller ID spoofing occurs when scammers use software or online services to manipulate the caller ID displayed on a victim’s phone, showing false information. This technique is intended to deceive the victim into believing the call is from a legitimate agency, company, or person when it is not.*

Statement from Mayor Pulkit Desai

Today, the Parsippany family suffered a heartbreaking loss.

One of our longtime Township employees, Terry Whalen, passed away while at work. He was a good man, a dedicated employee, and someone who spent many years serving our community alongside his colleagues and friends.
There are people who quietly come to work every day, do their job, serve their community, and become part of the fabric of this Township. He was one of those people.
My thoughts are first and foremost with his family, his loved ones, and his coworkers who are grieving this sudden loss.
In Parsippany, we take care of each other. Tonight, one of our own is gone, and we mourn together.

Out of respect for his family, we will share additional information when appropriate.
