🖤💛 TCS STUDENT FEATURE FRIDAY 💛🖤

🌟 Meet Delainey Bunnell! 🌟

This week's Student Feature Friday takes us to Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School, where we're excited to introduce Delainey Bunnell, a seven-year-old second grader in Mrs. Kovach's and Mrs. Kines's classes!

Delainey loves math, playing outside with her friends, fishing, riding her bike, and her mom's homemade mac and cheese! She has big dreams of becoming a doctor someday, but if she could be principal for a day, she'd make a few changes that students might really appreciate!

One of the sweetest parts of our conversation was hearing Delainey talk about her best friend, Emily, and why their friendship means so much to her.

Get to know Delainey through her interview and some fun rapid-fire questions!

⭐ GETTING TO KNOW DELAINEY ⭐

Q: What are three things you want people to know about you?

💬 My favorite color is yellow, I'm seven years old, and I have strawberry blonde hair!

Q: What's your favorite subject in school?

💬 Math! I like working with numbers.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not in school?

💬 I usually play outside with my friends or neighbors. We play tag or sometimes we play family.

Q: Do you play any sports?

💬 I played basketball last year. I'm not sure if I'll play this year.

Q: What are some of your favorite activities?

💬 I like fishing and going on bike rides.

Q: What's your favorite food?

💬 My mom's homemade mac and cheese!

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

💬 Flying! Because I could go anywhere I wanted, and I wouldn't have to ride in the car because I get carsick!

Q: If you were Mr. Buck (the principal) for a day, what would you do?

💬 No homework! And I would have pepperoni rolls every day because everyone likes them!

And what would go with those pepperoni rolls? Mac and cheese and chocolate milk, of course!

Q: If you could have any animal as a pet, what would you choose?

💬 A bunny! I would name her Bella because that's a super cute name for a bunny.

Q: What makes you laugh?

💬 My dad! He always tells good jokes.

Delainey even shared one of her dad's Star Wars jokes with us!

Dad: "Do you like Star Wars?"

If someone says yes: "Yoda one for me!" 💛

Q: If someone gave you a million dollars, what would be the first thing you'd buy?

💬 Probably a new iPad because mine broke!

Q: Who is someone you look up to?

💬 My best friend, Emily Wright. Most of my friends are always playing with other friends, and every time I'm sad, Emily is always there for me.

❤️ What a wonderful reason to appreciate a friend!

Q: What would you like to be when you grow up?

💬 Probably a doctor, so I can help people feel better.

Q: What's something you wish grown-ups understood better about kids?

💬 I wish parents knew more about Roblox because it's one of my favorite games!

Delainey especially enjoys the different mini-games and creating avatars. She even has a witch avatar named Stella!

Q: What's the best thing about Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School?

💬 Everyone is just really nice! The students, teachers, principals, vice principals—everyone here is super nice to me.

Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

💬 I have three brothers and no sisters!

Delainey is the only girl in her family. She shared that having a sister would be fun because they could play Barbies together and share clothes.

Q: Have you been anywhere fun on vacation?

💬 Last summer I went to an amusement park and the beach. I liked the beach better!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

💬 Disney World!

💙💛 A Special Tucker County Schools Staff Spotlight: Remembering Our Grandma Vernie 💙💛

Our Staff Spotlight usually takes place on Tuesdays, but today, we are sharing something especially close to our hearts.

Today, as family and friends gather to lay Luverna “Grandma Vernie” Varney to rest, we want to take a moment to honor a woman who gave so much of herself to the students and staff of Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School.

For more than a decade, Grandma Vernie was so much more than a volunteer. She was a helping hand, a listening ear, a fierce protector, a source of laughter, and, for so many, exactly what her name suggests — a grandma.

She didn’t need a title, a paycheck, or recognition to make a difference. She simply showed up, day after day, because she loved the children and the people who surrounded her.

Some of the most important lessons our students learn never come from a textbook. They come from people like Grandma Vernie, who teach us what kindness, loyalty, dedication, and unconditional love look like.

Today, we are honored to share this special tribute, featuring the voices and memories of students and staff whose lives were touched by this remarkable woman.

Grandma Vernie may no longer walk the halls of Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School, but the love she shared will remain there for years to come.

Rest peacefully, Grandma Vernie. Thank you for loving our children as your own. You will forever be part of the Tucker County Schools family. 💙💛

🎥 Forever Our Grandma Vernie

🖤💛 TCS Student Feature Friday: Meet Kiley Snyder!

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time to meet another one of the students who makes Tucker County Schools special!

This week, TCS Student Feature Friday takes us to Tucker County High School, where we’re getting to know senior Kiley Snyder!

Kiley is a volleyball player, an animal lover, an avid reader, and a student with some big plans for her future. After graduation, she hopes to begin her college journey at Potomac State College before transferring to West Virginia University and eventually pursuing a career as a diagnostic radiologist.

But there’s much more to Kiley than her academic and career goals! She loves spending time with family and friends, dreams of someday living near the beaches of North Carolina, and has quite the collection of family pets.

In fact, during our interview, Kiley shared something we certainly weren’t expecting. At one point, her family actually had a sheep living inside their house—and it wore a diaper! 🐑😂

As Kiley prepares for graduation, we sat down to talk about her favorite school memories, the friendships she’ll miss, her future plans, and the advice she’d give younger students.

So, let’s get to know Kiley Snyder! 🖤💛

🎤 Q&A WITH KILEY

Q: Tell us three things about yourself.

Kiley: My favorite sport is volleyball, although I’m thinking about trying wrestling. My favorite class is probably biology, and my favorite animals are cats!

Q: Speaking of cats, tell us about all your animals!

Kiley: I have four cats named Hansel, Gretel, Max, and Smudge. We also have a dog named Oakley, a rabbit named Dexter, and five chickens. One of our chickens is named Pam!

We even had a sheep living in our house at one point, and it wore a diaper! The sheep eventually went to live on a farm.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at school?

Kiley: I enjoy playing volleyball and spending time with my family and friends. I also like to read. I watch movies and television sometimes, but not very often.

Q: What’s your favorite book?

Kiley: All the Bright Places. It’s about two teenagers who help each other get through school. I really enjoyed it, and there’s a movie based on the book, too.

Q: What position do you play in volleyball?

Kiley: I play wherever my coach needs me, but my favorite position is back row, especially the back-left position. I like covering and feel like I do better there than at the net.

Q: Looking back at your years at Tucker Valley, do you have a favorite teacher or memory?

Kiley: My favorite teachers were probably Miss Underwood and Miss Betler. I’ve always done really well in English, and Miss Betler taught me a lot.

One of my favorite memories was doing yearbook in seventh grade. Mr. Lawrence, the history teacher, helped us a lot with the yearbook. He would come over to our class and pester us sometimes!

Q: What do you think you’ll miss most about Tucker County High School?

Kiley: The students. I made a lot of friends last year, especially through volleyball, and I’m really going to miss my volleyball friends.

Q: You’re a senior now! What are your plans after graduation?

Kiley: I plan to attend Potomac State for a couple of years, where my sister also goes, and then hopefully transfer to WVU. I want to become a diagnostic radiologist.

From what I’ve researched, it will take about 13 years of education and training. I’ll probably major in biology before going to medical school and completing the additional training.

Q: Do you see yourself staying in West Virginia after completing your education?

Kiley: I’ve always wanted to live at the beach in North Carolina, so that’s probably where I’d like to go. Nags Head is one of my favorite beaches, and my family has gone there since I was younger.

Q: What is it about the beach that you love so much?

Kiley: It’s the most calming place ever. I love the sun, and everything just feels so positive there. It’s a place where I can get away from everything.

Q: What advice would you give to an incoming freshman at Tucker County High School?

Kiley: Always stay positive and make as many friends as you can, even if they’re just hallway friends. Having someone you can say hello to in the hallway can brighten your day.

Q: If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would you say?

Kiley: I would tell myself to get involved in more extracurricular activities. I didn’t play volleyball in middle school, and looking back, I wish I had been more active and joined more things.

⚡ RAPID FIRE WITH KILEY

Early riser or night owl: Night owl 🌙

Beach or mountains: Beach! 🏖️

Sweet or salty: Sweet

TikTok or Snapchat: TikTok

Country music or hip-hop: Hip-hop

Favorite fast-food restaurant: Chick-fil-A

Favorite place in Tucker County: The baseball field in Parsons

If you could travel anywhere in the world: Anywhere with a beach!

One word to describe your senior year: BUSY!

🖤💛 One Last Thought…

One of the things that stood out during our conversation with Kiley was her advice to younger students. Sometimes, making a difference in someone’s day can be as simple as saying hello in the hallway.

As she prepares to leave Tucker County High School, Kiley is looking forward to the opportunities ahead while recognizing how much the friendships she’s made have meant to her.

Whether her future takes her to medical school, a career in radiology, or eventually to the beaches of North Carolina, we wish her nothing but success.

🖤💛 Best wishes to Kiley as she finishes her senior year and prepares for her next adventure!

🌟 It’s Alumni Spotlight Thursday! 🖤💛⚖️

This week, Tucker County Schools is proud to feature Melissa L. Rhoads, Esq., Tucker County High School Class of 1999!

From Tucker County to becoming a successful attorney and business owner, Melissa’s journey is a wonderful example of the opportunities that begin with a West Virginia public school education.

After graduating from TCHS, Melissa attended Wheeling Jesuit University and Syracuse University College of Law, graduating cm laude from both. Today, she is the sole owner of Tighe & Cottrell, P.A., a law firm serving Delaware and Maryland, as well as Delaware Incorporation Services, Inc., where she helps others establish their own businesses.

But Melissa’s Tucker County memories are just as impressive as her accomplishments! She spent four years keeping the scorebook for her uncle Coach Kyle’s Lady Mountain Lion three-peat state championship basketball team, traveled to countless games and tournaments, and remembers those unforgettable trips to Charleston. Add in school bus adventures, driving around with friends before cell phones, and a little Matchbox Twenty and country music, and you have some pretty great memories! 😄

Melissa also remembers the teachers who encouraged her to think independently and dream big, especially Mrs. Poling, whose love of learning and adventure made a lasting impression.

One of our favorite parts of Melissa’s story is what she says about West Virginia public education:

“A public education represents opportunity. It is somewhere to discover your strengths and dream for your future.”

Today, Melissa calls Delaware home, where she enjoys life with her two daughters, Emily and Avery, and their mini goldendoodle, Dolly Mae Doodlebug. Her definition of success has evolved from material accomplishments to helping others and having the freedom to enjoy family, friends, and new experiences.

Her advice to today’s Tucker County students?

“Be brave enough to be different.”

We’re proud to celebrate Melissa L. Rhoads and another wonderful example of where Tucker County roots can lead! 🖤💛

Our roots. Our people. Our pride.
