🙌🏿 NEW HOMEOWNER ALERT!!! 🙌🏿

Shanel was born and raised in Compton, California to her African and Native American mother and her Nicaraguan father. This unique blend of cultures played an important role in her upbringing, forming her identity, and shaping who she is today. Unfortunately, both of her parents passed away unexpectedly when Shanel was a young adult forcing her to grow up fast and navigate this world all on her own. That experience strengthened her independence and determination to build stability and a meaningful life despite the significant personal loss.

She made the cross-country move to attend Howard University. At Howard she not only completed her education but also found a deeper sense of purpose and spiritual grounding. It exposed her to a community of thinkers, leaders, and changemakers who reinforced her commitment to service, policy, and community development. After college, Shanel stayed in Washington D.C. where she has worked for the local government helping residents navigate housing issues, public services, and listening to community concerns. She says, “through my role, I see firsthand how access to stable housing can change the trajectory of someone’s life.”

Through a recent down payment grant from Greenline, Shanel was able to purchase a home of her own in the nation’s capital providing stable housing for herself and an investment that will hopefully leave a legacy and shape the trajectory of her life and her family for generations to come. She says, “becoming a homeowner has shaped my deep belief that homeownership is more than a financial milestone. It represents stability, dignity, and the opportunity to plant roots in a community.”

Congratulations, Shanel!

🙌🏿 WELCOME HOME!!! 🙌🏿 We're excited to announce that one of our very first Eaton Fire rental assistance recipients, Charles, a homeowner in Altadena for 27 years, has rebuilt his home and has moved back in!

Charles was dropped by his insurance company just six months before the fire because of an oak tree on his property that they saw as a fire risk and in turn, the city would not let him remove. He turned to the California Fair Plan for fire insurance and while his coverage allowed him to rebuild it did not provide him with any loss of use coverage meaning he would need to come completely out of pocket to live somewhere else while his home was being rebuilt. He applied for assistance from FEMA and was denied. Thankfully he found Greenline and we were able to provide him with rental assistance so that he could stay close to his community and have the stability of long-term temporary housing so that he could focus on rebuilding and returning home.

Some of the Greenline team was at Charles’ home earlier this week to welcome him home with a little gift basket. Congratulations, Charles on rebuilding and remaining in Altadena!

To date, we’ve helped 43 families with long-term temporary housing and rental assistance with an average grant size of $33,000 to stabilize them for up to a year, renewing leases as needs dictate. We’ve awarded over $1,200,000 in long-term temporary rental assistance to help survivors rebuild, restore, and remain in Altadena.

With a recent grant from the Pasadena Community Foundation, we can continue to offer this support so if you or someone you know needs this kind of assistance please reach out to us. We can still help.

🙌🏿 FROM HOMELESS TO HOMEOWNER!!! 🙌🏿

Jasmyne grew up in South LA but never really had a place to call home. Raised by a single mother, she and her siblings bounced around from place to place living in 13 different homes and apartments while growing up. Jasmyne faced housing instability in her early years as an adult as well. At one point her and her oldest son were homeless and living out of a car. However, Jasmyne worked hard and studied hard, earning a Bachelor's degree in Human Services and a Master’s degree in Psychology. Between her formal education and her life experiences, she has been able to give back and serve others as a social worker. First for children and families and now for homeless veterans. Her oldest son is now 13 years old and Jasmyne has been promising him his own room and a backyard to play in for years now. Homeownership for her means proving to others that when the odds are stacked against you that there’s still a way to achieve your dreams. Jasmyne recently received a down payment grant from Greenline which has helped make her dream of homeownership a reality! Congratulations, Jasmyne! You did it and welcome home!

🛠NEW HOME MAINTENANCE BEFORE & AFTER!!!🛠

In 2023, Aurora and David realized their dream of homeownership when they purchased a home in Lancaster, California with the help of David’s VA benefits. They were the first in their respective families to purchase a home and they intentionally chose an older home with enough space for their family to gather and grow together. They recently applied for a home maintenance grant from Greenline to help preserve and protect their investment. Greenline provided them with a grant that helped them to improve safety, accessibility, and functionality of their backyard by removing hazardous elements and creating a stable, usable outdoor space for family gatherings, rest, and community use. Congratulations, Aurora and David and enjoy that backyard!

🙌🏿 EATON FIRE REBUILD UPDATE 🙌🏿 Just a few months ago, in addition to long term temporary housing assistance, we granted Miss Louise, in partnership with Pasadena Community Foundation and Making Housing and Community Happen, a rebuilding assistance grant. We were there to celebrate the groundbreaking on Miss Louise’s new home. She opted to go the modular route, meaning her home would be manufactured off-site, delivered, and put together on-site. We're excited to share that just a few weeks ago her home was delivered! Now it will take about 60 days to get the home all in one piece, installed, and move-in ready and we will be there to welcome and celebrate Miss Louise and her family’s move back home soon!

Our rebuilding assistance grant recipients are all at various stages of the rebuilding process, but our very first grant recipients, Craig and Maria, are on the verge of being done! Two weeks ago, Craig and Maria’s contractor, Kendra Mays Designs, surprised them with a fully furnished home, and the Greenline team was there to congratulate them on reaching this milestone! We plan to throw a welcome home celebration for them with family, friends, neighbors, and all of the community partners that helped make this happen in the coming weeks!
