As we reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we’re revisiting Same Boat (Martin Luther King Jr.) by ArtCenter alum 's (BFA 2005), now part of the Whitney Museum's permanent collection.

The neon work—part of a series inspired by storefront signs across Los Angeles—illuminates King’s words in glowing color, turning the language of the city into a living reminder of community and connection.

Martinez has said that seeing neon signs still lit after hours felt like “the city was speaking back to me.” In his hands, that voice becomes one of resilience and shared purpose—an echo of Dr. King’s call to imagine justice and empathy as everyday acts.
